The view of Adams Peak from our Guesthouse

Prayers are offered at the foot of the climb

Stores all the way up sell Trinkets and Teddy Bears

Climb takes its toll...5200 steps!!

The Summit of Adams Peak is crowded with weary Pilgrams

Adams peak sunrise, beautiful

The sun rises over Prayer Flags at Adams Peak

The Long climb down from Adams Peak.

As we climb down many are just starting their Pilgrimage

Reaching the bottom we see what we have accomplished.
Very nice pics! Have you also fell asleep when you got up there?

Beautiful picture at the top! I am sure you both needed a nap after that trek.
.-= Akila´s last blog ..lovely lampang =-.
Yes Akila, a nap would have been fabulous except we had to move on that day. We were back at camp, showered and on the bus to Kandi by noon. Crazy eh!
Wow!! Stunning pictures!! What an experience to climb up there to catch the Sunrise. How long does it take to go to the top?

Hi Amy. It takes 2 to 4 hours to get to the top. We did it in about 2 and a half for stops to take photos and video and to catch our breath. The great thing about this climb is that people were doing it with their families. A lot of kids were climbing and some very strong and determined people were walking up with babies in their arms and children on their backs. I don’t know how they did it, I was exhausted with my pack. But then again, some people start climbing very early like 10 pm and take their time, napping along the way and stopping for food and drink. It is a pilgrimage, so people make an event of it. We started at 2:45 am and arrived at around 5:30 am. When we were coming down in the morning, some people were starting their climb to summit by mid day. You can go any time you like, but sunrise seems to be the most popular.
Great picts! I love the first one with the trail of lights going up the mountain.
Thanks Maria, that shot with the lights was a must for us. It is what Adams Peak is famous for, the lit path all the way up the mountain and we were so happy to be able to capture it.
Amazing pictures!! Especially the one with the sun. Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us.

I agree with everyone else – stunning photos, especially the shot of the sunrise…..I’m looking forward to reading more about this in a post that no doubt you’re writing!

Haha Trisha, how well you know us:-) The post about our time comes out tomorrow. Now if only we could get our acts together and edit the video for everyone to see. But that will be a little bit down the road. We have fallen behind on video editing I am afraid.
Beautiful photos! The hike to Adam’s peak is an adventure not to be missed! From the pictures, it doesn’t seem that there are many tourists there. Is that the case? We were in Sri Lanka one year ago and tourism was really suffering. I hope that through your documenting how beautiful the country is, you will encourage more people to visit.

Hi Jennifer, Tourism is still suffering, but it seems to be picking up. The local people are optimistic now that the civil war is over. They are hoping peace will last and they believe that it will. There were very few tourists climbing Adams Peak the day we climbed. It made it very special to us. We had people talk to us to discuss what the pilgrimage meant to us and them. Muslims climbed along side Buddhists, Christians and Hindu’s all have their reasons for climbing, and we non-demoninational people found it rewarding and very spiritual ourselves.
We read that the New York Times called Sri Lanka the destination to visit of 2010, let’s hope that brings people to this country that desperately needs it as well.
Those pilgrimage flags in the sunlight are simply stunning! I can just imagine how clean and crisp the air was that high up – amazing
The prayer flags are my favorite also. The air was definitely fresh and crisp. It was really a beautiful site.
