We didn’t even know that Peru had such vast sand dunes until we visited Huacachina in Peru. Located on an Oasis in the Ica district, Huacachina is a super place to chill out and relax. One of the best things you can do while chillaxin’ is to walk up to the top of a dune to watch the sun set over the desert. It is an awe inspiring experience. Huacachina is definitely a place where one could spend days enjoying the heat of the desert as you relax by the pool or go for a paddle on the lake. But it is the sand dunes that are the star attraction.

Besides walking along the vast peaks, you can go sand boarding anywhere in the desert. It’s an exhilarating experience. Grab a sand board from your guest house and simply walk from the lake to the top of a hill and let yourself zip down. We even found ourselves rolling and running down the hill just like we did when we were kids. It’s so much fun playing on these dunes, that your inner child will come leaping out. Want more of a thrill? Hire a jeep or join a tour that takes you out to the middle of the Peruvian Desert to ride the big dunes.
We took a dune buggy tour through the sand dunes and it was an exciting experience. As you are strapped into the jeep, your skilled driver climbs the high dunes before plunging into a steep valley. Hold your breath and pray you don’t end up rolling over. Feel the hot desert wind hit your face as you speed through the straightaways and then catch your breath as you enjoy a ride on some sandboards out in the middle of the vast sea of sand. The Peruvian desert is one of the most beautiful images we have ever seen and to stand atop a sand dune in Peru, is something you will never forget.

Wow I definitely wouldn’t expect dunes like this in Peru….beautiful shot though.
We didn’t expect dunes like this either. It was a complete surprise once we got there.
AMAZING!!! Looks like it goes on forever. I’ll be headed to Peru in September, but I’m not sure I’ll have time to visit here. I’ll keep it in mind, just in case.
Hopefully you make it Pamela. It’s a little bit out of the way of Macchu Pichu, but if you can swing it, Huaccachina is definitely worth the trip!
wow. wow. wow. To be honest, I’ve never thought about visiting Peru. This picture makes me wanna go. I love deserts!!!
Incredible! We missed this but I wish we hadn’t.
Peru is such a huge country it is so difficult to see everything. We missed the Amazon Basin when we were there and definitely want to go back.

We had no clue either before going to Peru either. There are so many things that surprise us when we’re on the road.
Great photo, as always! We just got back from the Peruvian Amazon, but may have an opportunity to go back and see some other parts of Peru later this year. Would love to shoot some scenery like this!
Beautiful shot! That’s one of the things I love about the South American countries – they have such diversity in the scenery throughout each of them. From the famous mountains of Peru to a desert like this! Very cool.
This is a beautiful photo! I visited Nazca while in Peru and found the desert to be absolutely stunning. Hope to return someday!
And soooo nice to meet you both at TBU. Hope to run into you again sometime. =)
There is so much to see in Peru, I could spend a year there. The desert is surprising indeed. We didn’t expect it to be so vast!
