Camel Silhouette in Desert

Going on a camel safari seems more glamorous than it actually is. When looking at photographs one thinks of Lawrence of Arabia and the Queen of Sheba. In essence, camels have terrible breath, their farts smell bad and they are very uncomfortable to sit on for hours on end. Riding through the desert can be tedious and monotonous, especially when you book a multi day safari in the Thar Desert of India.

However, going on a camel safari can also be an amazing opportunity for incredible photographs. There is nothing more amazing than eating a meal cooked over an open flame and sleeping under the stars with your saddle for a pillow. The sand dunes are stunning and coming upon a village and meeting people who welcome you into their homes is what travel is all about.

It is these opportunities that make people fantasize about taking a camel safari into the desert. So let’s not burst anyone’s bubble here and pretend that riding a camel in the desert is just as glamorous as this photograph makes it seem to be.

  1. Hmmm I guess camels just aren’t the most glamorous animals. The photo is beautiful though.

  2. Nice pic … the 2 day/1 night safari we did around Desert National Park was one of the most memorable experiences we had in India.
Agree about the immense photo ops … Cheers !

  3. It does *sound* amazing, but I think I’d be miserable uncomfortably riding on a camel for that long. The picture is really cool though!

  4. Whenever I see movies or pictures with people riding a camel in the desert I always think it looks uncomfortable, so thank you for clarifying that it actually is! Haha! I can’t imagine going on a multi day camel safari, but I guess some people are just gung ho about the safari adventure and life. Also, I never really thought about the fact that there are camel safaris in India- I always just associate that sort of thing with Egypt and the Middle East. Thanks for expanding my worldly knowledge. Why did you choose that location specifically for your safari?

    • Hi Katie, yes India is a big place to go on safari. We are one of those crazy people that are gung ho. We ended up doing two camel safaris in India and again in Jordan. We’ll probably do one again and say the same thing that we did here…not the best experience, but definitely something you have to try and in our case, do on a regularly basis. :)

  5. That was a wake-up call! You’re right I’ve always thought camel riding to be glamorous but I can see how it can be uncomfortable as well. But I agree that it’s worth trying, if not for the photos then just for the heck of it.

    • Well said A.R. Everything is worth trying at least once. And we’ve done it a couple more times since. We are gluttens for punishment and we will probably do it again one day too!
