It’s been exactly a year since we were driving a completely innapropriate car from England to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. The ridiculous tar roads of Kazakhstan that had buckled so much in the intense heat that we had to drive on top of the grooves in the road made by transports to keep from bottoming out to the corrupt officials in countless countries and the non-existant roads once we hit the Gobi Desert.
Well, today our good friend Pam of Spunky Girl Monologues has taken on the challenge for herself and another teammate.
We talked about the Mongol Rally over the winter and after hearing her thoughts on the trip, I knew she was exactly like us at that time pre-rally. In a happy space oblivous to the challenges ahead. Cut to a couple months later and we had conversations over SMS about just how insane it all is. My best advice to her was to hang in there, in the end you’ll be glad you did it!
Team SM Stowaway is on the road right now as we speak taking part in this road rally 1/3 of the way around the world and you can follow along in real time to see what whacky adventures they have in store.
A Broken Shock didn’t stop us last year, will Team SM Stowaway Make it?
They’re tweeting live on twitter at the hashtag #SMStowaway.
Not only is the Mongol Rally a great adventure, it is also for a good cause.
The guys at the Adventurists have raised 3.5 Million Pounds to help street kids in Mongolia and this year the official charity of the Rally is one that is very dear to our hearts, The Lotus Children’s Centre which is a supported by the Intrepid Foundation. The Intrepid Foundations was started by Intrepid Travel to give back to the countries that Intrepid visits.
Team SM Stowaway have a lofty goal of raising £75,000 but they can’t do it without you! If you give just $10 you can help make a difference. But better yet, for anyone who donates $75 or more, you’ll receive a Mongol Rally mystery crate. I didn’t know about this until I read it on our Mongol Rally Team mate’s website the other day. But this sounds like a lot of fun!
You could receive a piece of their car, a scarf from the Silk Road, some sand from the Gobi Desert, maybe a horse whip from a horseman in Mongolia! It could be anything and what a prize that would be by donating for a good cause.
What is amazing about Intrepid is that they will match donations dollar for dollar when you give. We’ve been working with Intrepid Travel for the past couple of years and have seen first hand the work they have done around the world helping people in the areas of health care, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and in environmental and wildlife protection.
Having visited Ulaanbaatar ourselves and visited a project there, we know that there is a great need to help homeless and abandoned children and it is project like The Lotus Children’s Foundation that make a huge difference in a child’s life.
Intrepid Travel has promised to match dollar for dollar of the first $10,000 AUD of Team SMStowaway’s donations. Help them reach their goal and make a difference in many lives as you follow along on their great around the world adventure.
Follow SM Stowaway for their Mongol Rally Adventures and be sure to follow their tweets live in Real TIme.
It’s already been fun watching their antics through Europe, but the fun is just beginning as they head East into the Great Unknown.
