Whale Bones on the Beach, Antarctica

We had just landed at Port Lockroy in Antarctica to do a little shopping at the old British research centre. It houses a museum, a gift shop and a post office where you can send post cards from the bottom of the world. But what we were really excited to see was the sculpture of a whale skeleton that someone put together years ago.

The Whale Bones litter the coastline on Jougla Point, Antarctica
Using actual whale bones that were washed up on the beach, some bored researcher pieced together this recreation of a whale skeleton. The bones are from different species of whales and even possibly seals, but it doesn’t make the sculpture any less interesting to view.
We were told by our expedition team at Quark Expeditions who consists of marine biologists and Antarctica experts that this skeleton gives you a good idea as to what an actual fully formed whale skeleton would look like. It was pretty cool to see.

BEAUTIFUL picture. And I would love to send a postcard from the bottom of the world!
Now that you say it, I kind of wish that we sent a post card from the bottom of the world. that would have made for a good souvenir. We did get video and photos of people putting it into the mailbox though. We’ll be posting those soon. So the lesson is…when you go to Antarctica, mail yourself a postcard.
Hope you sent yourself a postcard! I did in early January, and it just arrived in the states a few days ago. Looks like you had a beautiful day there–when we were at the same spot it was snowing and blowing! So glad you’re getting a chance to see this.
Wow! That is amazing. What I love about Antarctica is that even in the snowing and the blowing it is still thrilling. We didnt’ send ourselves a postcard I’m afraid. We don’t really have a home and we’ve never been one to send them. We really should have, but we did get photos and video of other people sending postcards home. It is very cool down there indeed.
What a cool photo!
That is quite an amazing find!
