Angkor Wat in Cambodia was a place of distant wonder for us back in 2000. People told us about khmer ruins in the jungle, but we never thought we would never get there. It was 3 years later when we came back to this part of the world and truly explored the countries of the region that we made it to these fabled temples.
You see temples are not really our thing but when we wlaked through the marble door of this one we knew it was different. Constructed between the 14th and 15th century this temple houses 1444 uniquely hand carved pillars.
One of our favorite places in India was the ancient city of Hampi. We had told you about this place way back in December, but as Dave was going through his photos the other day, we decided that words just couldn’t do justice to this spectacular site. What makes Hampi unique is that while it is a world heritage site and the ruins are impressive, the people of the land live, breathe and work among its walls.
Sri Lanka has its fair share of holy sites. Temples, like this one in the small town of Dodanduwa, dot the landscape. Some offered refuge during the Tsunami and others continue to be a place where monks study and learn the ways of Buddhism.
Have you ever had one of those days that you just can’t believe it is happening. That your good luck and fortune has been too good to be true and that your day was so exciting and exhilarating that your head spins when you go to bed? That was a day that Dave and I had today in India. I am always amazed at the moments in time that we have stumbled upon in our travels. We have seen some amazing things in our life by doing nothing more that having dumb luck.
Everyone loves ancient ruins. I find that we are drawn to find out about the past and to explore how people lived centuries ago. In Myanmar, we already felt as if we had stepped back in time, but to enter the grounds of Bagan, we definitely felt that nothing had changed here for centuries. Located on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River, it is a sight to behold.
After all, Egypt houses the greatest monuments on earth. It’s temples and pyramids are world famous and they are the top of most people’s dream destination to visit in their lifetime.
One of the top things that I just had to see when traveling to Laos, were the Pak Ou Caves. I had seen an episode on Don’t Forget Your Passport years ealier, and I had wanted to go their ever since. It is a sight definitely worth seeing. Located just 25 km outside of Luang Prabang, you can hire a boat to take you there for the day or take a Songthaew which is what Dave and I did.
Angkor Wat was certainly one of the most impressive structures on the planet and we were privileged to have seen her. I will never forget driving up to the complex and seeing Angkor Wat standing proudly over the water.
