Follow Me At Sea on Twitter With Princess Cruises

-

princess-logoIt was a year ago this month that we re-started our travel blog.

In all our years of travel, we never had a blog until we decided to cycle our way through Africa in the world’s longest bike race in 2008.

We thought it would be a great idea to keep friends and family informed of our progress. We didn’t have a clue that you could actually make a living out of travel blogging.

So when we got home from Africa, we stopped blogging.

ThePlanetD sat dormant for 6 months!

It was while doing research on how to become a travel writer that I stumbled across other travel blogs and realized that this was a great medium for travelers.

I read Nomadic Matt’s Ebook Make Money with your Travel Blog, I scoured the Travel Writers Exchange, Joined the Travel Blog Exchange and started Twittering.

Twitter

I remember asking Dave last summer if he thought we were wasting our time building up our twitter following.  Was it just a silly social site.  We talked about it and decided that if corporations, movie stars and musicians are taking Twitter seriously, we should take it seriously too.

We knew that we would have limited access to the internet while traveling through India, and Twitter was our best and easiest way to stay connected with the travel world. So we kept building relationships, followers and making friends.

We first heard about the Follow Me at Sea Media Trip last year on Brilliant Trips Blog.  They are great friends on Twitter and I followed along as they enjoyed a complimentary cruise to the Caribbean.  Princess Cruises invited a select few Bloggers to Tweet about their time at sea. All I could think about was how I would love to be that big of a Travel Blogger that Princess Cruises would invite me to come along with them one day.

When the trip was over Brilliant Trips posted a wrap up of their time on the ship.  They ended with a note that the trip was so successful that Princess Cruises would be hosting another media trip to Alaska in June and if you are interested in being considered, send them a tweet.

We were interested alright!

Alaska is an adventure that we have always wanted to take part in.  If there is one cruise in this world that we would be interested in, it would be a Cruise to Alaska.

I sent my tweet with high hopes. They just had to pick us.  We are adventurers! We would be perfect for Alaska. We would take part in every land excursion they had to offer and we would tweet our hearts out about seeing Alaska.

We just got home for a short break from Central Asia before heading off to France, when we received an email from Princess Cruise Lines inviting us on their 2010 Follow Me at Sea Media Trip to Alaska.

I saw the subject heading in our inbox and started dancing around Dave’s parents living room.

Dave told me to calm down, it might not be anything.  It could just be an invitation to enter.  I didn’t stop dancing, I knew that we were in!  It turns out that it was indeed an invitation to join them and we are leaving for Alaska on June 15th.

Our hard work on Twitter had paid off and now we were receiving the ultimate reward.

We are spending 12 Glorious days on land and at sea enjoying what is in our opinion the most exciting cruise out there.

Our Itinerary is as follows

  • Day 1 : Arrive at Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge
  • Day 2:  Ride the Princess Rail from Fairbanks to Denali
    • Optional land excursions  from Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge
  • Day 3: Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge
    • National History Tour in Denali National Park
    • Afternoon at leisure and optional land excursions
  • Day 4: Motorcoach from Denali to the McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge
    • Afternoon at leisure and optional land excursions
  • Day 5: Motorcoach from McKinley to Talkeetna
    • Travel by the McKinley Express Rail from Talkeetna to Whittier
  • Day 6: Hubbard Glacier cruising
  • Day 7: Glacier Bay National Park cruising
  • Day 8: Skagway
  • Day 9: Juneau
  • Day 10: Ketchikan
  • Day 11: Inside Passage cruising
  • Day 12: Vancouver

It is going to be an amazing ride and we hope that you will follow along with us on Twitter in June. They are offering us free internet while we are at sea and we will be taking advantage of it.  We will be posting regularly and tweeting daily.

Thanks Princess Cruises.

  5. Wow wow wow! Congratulations Deb and Dave!! We are so happy for you. We’ve been in a Princess Cruise once (when we cross the Atlantic Ocean, an alternative transportation from America to Europe) and we loved our journey. It was the Ruby Princess, their food and entertainment were excellent. A great thing that you guys get free internet, it is really really expensive on board.

Well, looking forward to get the tweets from the sea!

  11. Congratulations Deb and Dave!! I love to cruise. The last we took was a 10-day Eastern Caribbean cruise with stops at 10 different islands. The weather was great. The ship was amazing. The staff was also very attentive and we love it. Our four kids are still talking about it, and we’re planning another cruise in the new year. By the way, you’re itinerary looks great!
