What a year! My passion is photography, and I have been lucky enough to travel the world photographing some of the most beautiful and unique places on earth. It was a thrill for me to win gold in “Best Photo Illustration of Travel” at this year’s Society of American Travel Writers, Lowell Thomas Awards. I never thought I’d have anyone recognize my photography in such a way and then it happened. And now, I want to share my own round up of my favourite photos through This Year in Pictures…
We ended 2014 in Alberta Canada. This time last year we were sitting in Canmore finishing up a trip doing amazing adventures in Banff and Lake Louise. What an adventure that was! Check out our fun and silly adventure Ski Jorring!
Ontario: Missinaibi Trek
Deb and I had the privilege of exploring our own backyard of Ontario Canada and let me tell you, it is beautiful! The sheer scope and scale of the province was astounding. We could drive for 12 hours and barely put a dent in our exploration of Ontario.
Check out the Best of Ontario Winter.
February: Queensland, Australia
We didn’t only spend time in Canada though, just when we thought we couldn’t take the cold any longer, we jetted off to Queensland, Australia to explore its tropical north.
What a beautiful destination, my favourite part of photographing Queensland was getting up in the mornings for sunrise. I don’t think we’ve ever set our alarms so early for so many days in a row.
March: Australia to Oregon
We then popped over to Oregon. That state surprised me. I loved photographing everything there. What was so surprising was how varied the landscape was. From the stark rocky landscape of Smith Rock to the high desert and even the lush forest with waterfalls and rivers, I have my camera ready to snap shots of everything.
April: Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland
We then hopped a flight to Ireland where we had the honour of being the first media to drive and document the entire Wild Atlantic Way. This route is a photographer’s dream.
It was nearly impossible to drive more than a few miles before having to step out of the car and take yet another shot of the stunning coast. From the high cliffs of Moher to the green countryside of Dingle, it was one beautiful shot after another.
May: Whitewater Kayaking, Ontario
It was then a summer packed full of adrenaline as we took on daring adventures in Ontario, Canada. Adventures that challenged us, scared us, and excited us. I pulled out the GoPro for our water shots as we took on the Ottawa and Madawaska Rivers.
June: Moose Safari, Algonquin Park, Ontario
I then had my best lenses and gear armed and ready to capture moose in Algonquin Park.
Fly Fishing: Hornpayne, Ontario
Later in the summer, we took a floatplane way up north to escape civilization in the Ontario Wilderness where we learned to fly fish. We had a cameraman with us on this trip, but I still brought my own gear and spent my time snapping photographs of this beautiful part of the Province.
July: Slate Islands, Ontario
We paddled the Slate Islands on Lake Superior in search of Caribou.
Lake Superior, Ontario
We drove motorcycles around the same lake exploring the entire 2500 km of coast.
August: Manitoulin Island, Ontario
We set off to Manitoulin Island: The world’s largest fresh water island, where we followed the Great Spirit Circle Trail with the Anishinabek People of the island.
Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario
It was then back up to the North Shore of Lake Superior to hike the Pukaskwa Trail. Photography proved to be a challenge here because we had to carry all of our gear on our back for the entire the 60 km trail.
I wanted to scale back on my photography equipment, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture every moment of our time on this beautiful trail.
September: Cancun, Mexico
We then flew to Mexico where we finally had the chance to swim with whale sharks. The GoPro and Lumix waterproof cameras came in handy for this.
It was then back to Ireland. But this time we drove the Causeway Coast seeing sites like….
The Giant’s Causeway, And more!
I didn’t expect Santorini to be so photogenic. But it was.
The skies were blue, the towns of Oia, Imeroviglia, and Fira were picture perfect.
And the sunsets were glorious.
We had visited Hong Kong once before in the past. But it was for two short days. This trip allowed us 7 days in the city and I made sure to photograph everything I missed before.
We ventured outside of Hong Kong several times and one lucky moment allowed us to glimpse monks doing their thing at the Big Buddha.
November: Sri Lanka
We love Sri Lanka. We spent a month there in 2010 and have always wanted to go back.
This trip was much too short and fast to really enjoy and explore, but I still managed a few photographs of places we hadn’t visited before.
Like the temple of the tooth in Kandy.
We took a cruise down the Amazon with International Expeditions on this beautiful boat.
We saw a lot of wildlife and birds.
And more spectacular sunsets.
I think the moments I remember most during 2014 were the quiet ones with Deb either early in the morning or watching the sun go down together. Photographing the world is a dream come true, but being able to stop and enjoy the moments without a lens to my eye is even better. So make sure to stop and enjoy the moments too. All the best to you for 2015!
