A Week in Review at ThePlanetd Blog, August 3

Wow, has a week gone by already? Now that I have made a point of stating that I will be starting a regular segment at the Planetd, I suddenly worry that I won’t have enough to write about, and yet I have been writing this weekly update for over a month. So let’s give it a shot.

First of all I would like to thank twortw and lavieenchina for asking us to contribute to their series. Twortw had a fun post regarding What is on the Back of your Toilet and La Vie en China had a lovely idea of Favorite Travel Souvenirs. We enjoyed contributing to both and look forward to more in the future.

With all of the guest posts that we have done in the past, we feel that we should have a series or group contribution of our own in the near future. If only we could come up with an idea.  That is definitely something we are going to explore this month.

Now onto business. I have to say that I am starting to feel a little vulnerable running a blog. It was one thing when we were simply writing our daily journal during the Tour d’Afrique, but now that we are putting an effort into making it a business and are started to gain more exposure, I am not enjoying all of the spam emails.  I made the mistake a few weeks ago of answering a question regarding how much it would cost to travel to Europe. It was a quick response with not a lot of information, as whenever we have gone to Europe it has been to visit my sister, so we have always had a home base and really don’t know the actual cost. However, since replying, I have received a couple more similar emails. I looked this up in a google search and have read that many bloggers have had the same experience.

What these emails do is ask a question to a supposed expert, you answer and then they post your answer on their website with your name and email attached. I looked it up and sure enough, my answer is posted on a site along with another bogus answer attached to my name that I didn’t even write. I have no idea what recourse I have in this situation except to write about it on my blog and to hopefully deter other bloggers from answering similar emails. You are all probably not as stupid as I am, but I really have had a few legitimate questions sent my way.

So that is the downside to my week.

Now for the more positive steps we are taking.

We have stared submitting articles in earnest to article marketing networks. We subscribed to Unique Article Wizard to give it a try. We figure that we can afford the monthly fee while we are here in Canada working and hopefully over the next couple of months we can get our articles out there on the internet with a lot of links leading back to our site. I searched my name while writing this post and found a lot of articles are online now and it has only been a week.  I first read about article marketing at thetravelwritersexchange and of course NomadicMatts How To Make Money With Your Travel Blog talked a lot about it. He goes into a lot of detail about article marketing among many other factors to kick start your travel website.

Submit your article to hundreds of sites

I hope I am doing everything right, it is a little scary to see your name all over the Internet. Google has so many rules and you don’t want to break anything for fear of being penalized, but I think that I am following the rules correctly. Does anyone else submit to article directories out there, what are your experiences.

Going back to some points that I touched on during earlier posts….

We have now added a “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” thanks to Anil’s suggestion at foxnomad

We have also added a little plugin at the end of our posts to “subscribe to our RSS.” We never really knew the value of subscribers until recently and we have realized that we haven’t made it very clear to people on how to subscribe. This rang true when my good friend who isn’t a blogger asked me if there is anyway to subscribe to my blog and I walked her through it on the phone step by step. At that moment it was clear to me, that for people who aren’t on the internet all of the time, that little “subscribe to us” at the top of the page isn’t very clear. She thought that the RSS button at the top right of our page was just a cute little piece of artwork.  I tend to forget that 3 months ago, I had no idea what RSS meant and I was very confused about the whole thing.

We have also taken off the widget at the sidebar regarding comments. We didn’t reply to comments on our site in the past because I didn’t think that people revisited posts to see if there were follow up comments. But I now think that it is important to follow up and answer comments. So we took that recent comments widget out of the sidebar because it will probably be cluttered with our comments more than other peoples recent comments.

Let me know if you think I should put it back up or not.

We have also decided that we like su.pr for posting on twitter for scheduled tweets. I have seen a bit more traffic from stumble as well. I like what someone did with their su.pr account. When I clicked the link from twitter it went to their stumble homepage. There was a little blurb stating that “if you like this post make sure to give me a thumbs up.” I haven’t figured out how to do that, if anyone knows, I would love to hear about it. I asked that person how to do it, but they never got back to me.

We still haven’t really figured out how to make StumbleUpon work for us.

I also want to add my stumble homepage into my sidebar, but I can’t figure out that one either. I have had some people ask me what my stumble account is and that I should have it linked on our site, but all we have is the link to add our post to stumble.  Apparently stumble is a very good tool, we just haven’t mastered it yet. But when we do, you will be the first to know.

Someone suggested that we discuss Social Bookmarking in a future post and that is something I definitely want to explore. So while you are here, check out our poll to help give us an idea on what works best for you and then we can share our results and information on what we have learned about bookmarking in our post next week.

OK, I am at 1000 words, so it is time to sign off for the week. So many things happen each week that I understand why there are so many blogs out there dedicated to running a website. But this is a travel site so I must remain focused.

See you out there on the internet and have a great week.

  1. That’s very scary about the spam mails. Thanks for sharing. I got a couple emails asking to link my site and a link back. But I couldn’t find their sites so I figure that this must be part of another spam as well. Gotta be careful out there. :)

  2. Hey,
You can report that bogus post to DMCA, that’s the legal department of the web, it’s free. plus you can tell them you’ve done it and have them delete the post.

I’d like to know about su.pr as well. I tried but it’s not doing what i want :)
I am doing guest posters lately a lot, i feel so many people out there have so many great things to offer from different prespectives:) and I don’t have a series, per say, you can just go random posts, and just ask for specifics that you’d like.

also, i found having an editorial calendar really helps. it doesn’t matter if you’re at home or traveling!

  3. Thanks so much for posting about your journey through this. I am enjoying your honest take on the whole thing.

Hey Deb and Dave – great roundup of your week, and thanks for the mention.

On the page where your email address is posted, you can try going to http://allwhois.com to look up the domain, and see if you can get a clue where the site is hosted for example my site is hosted at 1&1 so if you do a allwhois search on my domain you’ll see at the bottom the DNS servers (who is hosting the domain) is ns57.1and1.com – that’s the clue you want (sometimes the hosting company is listed at the very bottom in tiny print on the site as well ) – then if you go to that hosting companies site and contact them, they can forcibly take down that page or whole site. If you can’t find the host company, but can find out who the registrar company is, often they can help too. Many of them are very nice and don’t want sites like that around polluting the internet.

On Stumble – if you use firefox you can get the Stumble toolbar and then you have a little thumbs up/thumbs down button you can use when you are at any site to Stumble them. You do need a Stumbleupon account (which you already have), and of course you can “thumbs up” your own site too :)

And I agree – you should reply to comments because there are definitely people who look to have a conversation with you….maybe they ask a question, or are interested in what you have to say in a followup comment…..

  5. Dave & Deb – I fell victim to those email scams as well. They seemed fishy, but believing in good kharma I did answer a few of them. I didn’t know where they ended up until I came across one of my “expert advice” in a Google Alert. In our enthusiasm to inspire others to travel, we are susceptible to these types of scams. But now we know better, and hopefully others will as well!

  6. Hey Dave and Deb,

Just wanted to say a BIG thank you for contributing to “Favorite Travel Souvenirs: Collecting Memories from Abroad” on La Vie en China. Love the trophy from South Africa and appreciate you guys sharing!

    Best, Ashley

Marina, Thank you for the advice on where to file my complaint and Trish, thanks for letting me know where I can find the company that hosts it. I will look into everything.
Michaela-I feel the same way that you did. I wanted to be nice and share any information. I have to say, I actually felt relief when it was only posted on a site. I had a little panice attack worrying that if I answered an email, I might have compromised the security of my gmail. (yes I can be a little silly when it comes to the internet)I think from now on, I will answer questions on my blog or write a post about it.
Trish, thanks for the advice on stumbleupon!
And thank you all for your support advice and conversation. I really enjoy these mondays:)

Thanks for the link and so glad to see subscribe to comments :)

I’ve gotten some strange emails and comments, especially lately, but I think that happens with more exposure. I’m skeptical now when I get messages from people I don’t know (and I hate having to be that way) but usually after a message or two can get a pretty good idea of the person and how to respond.

I’ve been on the fence about using Unique Article Wizard – think I’ll give it a shot after hearing your thoughts.

Also, I still can’t figure out SU and I’ve been using it for more than a year. I want to get better at it but I don’t find that particular service that intuitive.

  9. Anil!
I can’t figure out Stumble Upon to save my life:) I’ve done a bunch of research and simply can’t understand the benefits of it. yet, if you read some of the top bloggers they swear by it.
so if anyone can do a step by step explanation, I’d love that!

  10. davendeb says:

Well, I am glad that I am not the only one struggling with SU. Marina is right, top bloggers swear by it, that is why I keep trying. If I make any headway I will let you know.
I am still new to Unique Article Wizard, so I wouldn’t take my word for anything yet as I too am still figuring it out as well. However, once again top bloggers love it and use it and it seems to a good tool to get articles out there on the internet. I am hoping I will see results in the next month so that I can share my experience with you.
Thanks for all of the comments.

  11. davendeb says:

One thing that I have noticed is that since I started using su.pr, I have seen more traffic from stumble. I don’t know if it has anything to do with it, but that is why we keep using it.

  12. Anil says:

    @ marina:

I’m hoping to set some time aside this weekend to finally wrap my brain around it. I’ll share any good material I can find. I bet I’ll find it’s easier than I’m making it out to be in my head :P

    @davendeb:

I’ll wait to see how Unique Article Wizard works out for you before jumping in. Hopefully by then I’ll have the time to come up with some new posts for it.

  13. Sherry Ott says:

Sounds like you guys are making great progress – I”m jealous that you have the time to focus on it! Thanks for your insight into the unique article wizard – may give it a look. It’s just nice to know that others are out there struggling along trying to understand all of this like me! :) I also was getting those weird questions from people I didn’t know and figured it was some kind of spam thing. I guess sometimes it’s good to be untrusting…yet it could be why I’m still single! :)
Keep the great posts coming – you two are the best!
    Sherry

  14. Shannon OD says:

Looking forward to finding out how the Article Wizard works for you – something I have also looked into a bit but opted not to do right now :-) Interested in how it works for you!

Also – I too am a bit mystified with SU – working on it, and I do get some referrals, but not sure how, why etc!

Again, love this weekly post, so thanks!

  15. davendeb says:

Oh yes, Sherri. We are definitely struggling along. I will keep you all posted on Unique Article Wizard. I don’t think I will see a change for at least a month though.

  16. Sherry Ott says:

Hey there – I have a question – what is the widget or plug in you used for the ‘notify me of comments via email’ functionality? Would love to add to my blog – but don’t know where to find it.

Plus – in a later post you mentioned that you hired someone for SEO work. Can you provide any more info on what something like that costs? I know that you said you put in a request and then people bid on the work, however I”m just curious to understand a ballpark cost of what something like that would cost.
    Thanks!

  17. Sherry Ott says:

Thanks so much! Just got it install on my blog! Very easy!
