Video and Travel Blogs can be a Very Good Thing

Have you ever thought of putting video on your website? Check out my guest blog at Travel Writers Exchange. When Dave and I first started traveling, we concentrated more on our videos and photos than anything else. We would make little 22 minute episodes to share with our friends and families when we came home. We found a movie of each country explained our experiences more than anything and they could relate to our travels on a more intimate level. For them, they felt like they were traveling right along with us. When Youtube came out, we went crazy over it and posted all of our videos in a shorter version online.
Since then, we have evolved to running our own blog, but video will always be our first love. We get a kick out of making our own show and acting like travel hosts, and we definitely plan on running podcasts when we leave for our trip later this year.
Now that that we have this website, we are excited to be able to share our not only our travel writing and pictures, but we can have our videos online as well. We have discovered a great new plugin that lets us put our videos right into our post which we just discovered last week and tried out on our favorite foods of the world post.
So head on over to the Travel Writers Exchange and see what we have been doing with our videos, how we have uploaded them and what we use to edit them. Leave a note and let us know if you have been using video on your blog. We love finding out about great new plugins and ways to incorporate video, so let us know of your suggestions.
Tell us any problems that you have encountered or what little secrets you have found to work for you.
On another note….
Make sure to check out our interview at The 9 to 5 Alternative tomorrow. It is all about taking our blog to the next level. Or at least how we are trying to take our blog to the next level. Allan asked some very insightful questions that really made us think about where we came from, where we are now and where we are going. I hope it is as interesting for you to read as it was for us to answer.

Video and Travel Blogs can be a Very Good Thing

Just found your site through Andy Hayes – this is great! My fiancee and I are starting an 11-month world trip in less than a month, and were back and forth on whether or not to take a video camera. It looks like you guys recommend it – just out of curiosity, what type do you use?
Thanks for the advice! Love the website!
Thanks! We highly recommend video. It really puts your friends and families in the moment more than a photo. They can hear the noises and see the hustle and bustle. Try to get a grasp of your editing system before leaving. It can take time and you don’t want to have any frustrations on the road. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy. We use Imovie, but we are upgrading to FinalCutPro. It is a little difficult to change, but final cut just gives a more professional feel. We use a Cannon HV20 video camera. We are looking into a hard drive camera for our next trip though. We are weighing the odds with carrying around an extra hard drive as opposed to extra video tapes. We want to go more compact and we aren’t thrilled with the audio quality on the Canon. Before we went digital, we used a sony camcorder before and we loved it. Will probably go back to a Sony. Will keep you posted.
Thanks for the help guys! You already have me shopping around again…
I really agree with you about posting videos on your site. I have seen a great increase in site visitors while doing this so it works very well. I love coming to your website for technical information. You also have some great traveling experiences, thanks!
Hi Sarah, I agree about the videos. Now we just have to edit our entire video footage from 6 months in Asia and 1 month in Europe. So much to do, but it is worth it!
