Twitter,Travel Tuesday, the Week in Review

I have been twittering for the past couple of months and Tuesdays are a very big day for travelers. It is #TravelTuesday on Twitter, one of my favorite days online. I am introduced to all kinds of new travel bloggers. It is a lot of fun. People tweet away recommending new friends to follow, people tweet fantastic posts and I am completely addicted.

This weekend, we passed 1000 followers. It was very exciting. A little ridiculous I know that we were excited to have 1000 followers, but since I started blogging in earnest a few months ago, I have become obsessed with numbers. When I lose a subscriber I feel bad. When our stats go down, I get a little depressed but then when they go up I am ecstatic! I have read that as a website owner, you should stop obsessing over the numbers, and in theory, I understand this. but yet, I keep getting up every morning to check my stats.

Problogger says that he checks his stats everyday to look for trends, problems and where his traffic is coming from.  I like to tell myself that I am checking for that reason as well.  But mostly, I just look at the numbers.  I am starting to understand how to read my Blog Stats a little better however. I have been looking at where views are coming from and what types of posts are popular, but I have a long way to go to even worry about trends and traffic.  For now I am simply happy when people come back.

I am amazed with these sites that have 30 or 40 comments on their posts. I am in awe of sites that have their feedburner stats displayed and they have over 1000 subscribers. I am inspired by these people everyday and it keeps me coming back to my keyboard day in and day out. Not only because I love to write, but to see all of the great travel bloggers out there that are doing so well, I am inspired to hopefully one day be in their league, or at least approaching their league. Thanks for reading…..

And with that, let me tell you how the past week went.

We had a guest post on the week in the life of the Tour d’Afrique at theprofessionalhobo last Monday, and thanks to that post, we are now syndicated on theworldreviewer.com Thank you Nora for the exposure.

Travelblogs is having a great series about travel couples and we were honored to contribute two posts. One about Why the Jouney is Better When you Have Someone to Share it With and The Art of Negotiation.

We are absolutely loving writing guest posts and look forward to more in the near future.

Have a happy Travel Tuesday and keep twittering. If you haven’t joined twitter, join it. It is fun, informative and if everyone is right, it is the wave of the future.

  1. I just had Travel Tuesday clarified for me today, I’m so late on it! I was (and still am to a point) stat crazy but find the less I look at them the better they get.

  4. I am new to Twitter–despite an addiction to other social media–your post inspired me to investigate the # business. I’m now a Travel Tuesday follower. (Can you be a follower of a hash tag topic?)

Completely with you on the stats for a new blogger–Google Analytics is now rivaling facebook for an at-work distraction.

  5. I like your honesty in about always checking numbers. We all do it! And if used properly, it can give us very useful feedback. At the end of the day, it’s good content that brings people back to any website. I’ve been through the majority of your site, and I’ll admit the content is great. So I wouldn’t worry to much about losing readers. Before you know it, you’ll have more then you’ll know what to do with! :D Keep up the good work, guys.

  6. Thanks you guys. It is good to hear that I am not alone in Stats checking. I am starting to pay more attention to using them as a tool rather than just numbers. Thanks for the great advice and support!

  7. Yeah, I am totally into stat checking too. I find it very helpful because I am realizing what posts get the most hits and how to link them to previous posts so my bounce rate isn’t so high. It is amazing how a few simple changes and links can drastically increase interest in other posts. I am not quite as obsessed with Twitter yet, but I think that’s only because I’ve been at it for a few weeks.

  8. Congrats on surpassing 1,000 subscribers (I’m with you on the comment thing – I don’t have a super-active collection of commenters), and I’m so glad that World Reviewer caught wind of you from your guest post on my site! Writing guest posts can be an excellent way to boost your traffic.
    Cheers!

  9. Yes. Google analytics is a great tool.
I haven’t been obsessing about any numbers yet. I find them rising slowly but surely and that is encouraging. I like the way they analyze each sector of the site and give you details. It helps in so many ways including that you can find out from where your referrals are coming from so that you can keep concentrating on taking care of that part. I saw that since I am using twitter regularly and becoming more organized in my followings and sharing. More than half of my new visitors are coming from twitter and things like #followfriday and #traveltuesday on those days the visitors are even more. It’s been helping me as a travel blogger to form more friendships and interactions with other travelers, and finding new blogs to learn from and enjoy. I found that the travel blogging community is very supportive in trying to really share all the travel blogs between each other and introducing them to one another. Better than any other niche related blogger community. Travelers like to share.
In all the tips that are aimed to help build traffic to a site they all say the most important factor is the content and the style of writing that gets people to visit you again and again. They want information and they want that information for free. The only thing that gets me to subscribe to a blog or revisit it is because I enjoy what is posted. That’s what lures the readers. No one wants to waste the minimum time they have sitting on the computer reading something they don’t enjoy. That’s what I always think of now when ever I am writing a post… is this boring? Would the reader like it? Who are the people reading it?
I am sure will be seeing 30-40 comments soon on your site. They all say that if you keep at it the numbers will come just keep doing what you do its great content.

  10. I can relate to the obsession with stats that you mention, and as a newcomer to Twitter, I’m sure this will soon divert course!

    Congrats on the milestone.
