Travel is Glamorous…In Retrospect

the glamour of travel

Oh Yeah, this is glamorous

I had read a great quote somewhere recently by Paul Theroux.  It goes something along the lines of

“Travel is Glamorous only in Retrospect”

When I saw Dave doing our laundry in a little bucket beside the toilet in our coco hut bungalow, this quote came perfectly to mind.

When we come back from our travels through Asia, we will forget about the basic beds in not so clean rooms, showering over toilets, squatting in squalor and trying to sleep through night of howling dogs and cawing crows.

We instead will remember the beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets and glorious mornings.  We will think about the times we walked in the surf and bathed in the sun.  We will think of lovely dinners at twilight and our cocktails at happy hour watching the sun go down for e evening.

Travel is difficult.  It is stressful, exhausting, nerve racking and trying on our patience.

And yet, we love it, we live for it. It makes us feel alive and as Paul Theroux stated…

Travel is Glamorous only in Retrospect”

  1. Oh my gosh this is SO TRUE……I try really hard to not let things bother me when I’m on the road, but as you know, invariably something goes wrong, or just not as planned (like your iPhone woes)….and yet somehow those stories get more humorous when we get home, and we really do just focus on the highlights. Maybe it’s a human coping mechanism, but I’m glad for it. If all we talked about are the things that go wrong, no one we talk to would ever want to travel!

Even with some of the challenges you’ve been striding through, I’ve really been enjoying reading about your trip – you’re teaching me what to watch out for when I get a chance to go there!

  2. Travel IS difficult. Often non-travelers see it as an extended vacation, but it can be really hard work at times! Luckily the rewards make is so worthwhile.

  3. That is just too true! While people are so jealous about traveling, they forget that there’s a lot more that comes with it than sightseeing and great food (like precisely what food you’re actually eating!). Love the toliet shot w/Dave – what a lovely bathroom :-)
