The Misadventures of Pre-Travel Planning

It’s Monday, you know what that means. Time to tell you the mis-adventures of  Dave and Deb preparing for India and how things are going at theplanetd.

Let me start by talking to you about our electronics. As many of you know, we bought and Iphone and are ready to use it to keep in touch during our travels.  We made sure to buy one that is a little bit older because the software is easier to unlock.  Or so we thought. Dave went through all of the steps to unlock the phone and we thought all was well.

That is until we put in our Sim card and didn’t get a signal.

After further investigation on the Internet, Dave discovered that the guy that sold him the phone updated the firmware for which there is no way to unlock.  Can’t blame the guy, he thought he was being nice.

So now we have an Iphone, that cannot be unlocked at the moment.  We have it up on Craigslist now and are hoping to sell it before buying an already unlocked phone. The good new is that at least we tried it here in Canada before leaving for India.

The next misadventure happened when we bought batteries for our new Panasonic GH1 Camera.  We like to have 3 batteries.  One came with the camera and then we bought an extra battery at the camera shop.  But at 90 bucks a pop, we decided that one Panasonic battery was enough and we would buy a third party battery for our other back up battery.  It is much cheaper and we have always used third party batteries for our cameras in the past and they have always worked fine.  Not this time.

Yet again the bloody firmware came back to haunt us.

Panasonic updated this specific model so that you cannot use third party batteries.  You have to use the Panasonic battery which is 3 times the price.

So now we are sitting with a battery that we cannot use and an iphone that we cannot use.  Hey at least we don’t leave for 4 weeks.

On a positive note, we have sped up our site.

We hired a great guy once again from Scriptlance and he made our site 70% faster.  We have noticed a huge improvement.  He says that he has done all that he can for now, and the next step that we need to do is change hosts.  Bluehost is too limiting for our site and we haven’t been thrilled with the amount that bluehost is down anyway. It seems that several times a week our site is down due to server problems.

We are considering changing as our term is expiring with bluehost in a couple of weeks, but it seem like a daunting task.  He is suggesting we change to Host9.

Anyone else have some advice on servers and changing from one to another?

We still have to re-size our photos as well to speed it up even more. We uploaded way too big of files, so that is a task for Dave to do in the next couple of weeks. But for now, we are feeling pretty good with the loading time.

Other News…

We are going to be trying out some Microfiber Firm Support Travel Socks for our adventures and travels. It is always nice to be contacted to try out a product or two and we are going to put these socks through their paces. We let you know how they hold up as we hike and trek our way through Asia.

We developed some nice links this week too.  Is it just me or is it the time of year? But we suddenly started receiving offers from companies to place ads and to do some nice link exchanges too.  We assume that it must be because it is October. It is the beginning of the 4th quarter of the year, so people are updating their links and adspace.

The business of Blogging still baffles us, but we are slowly learning and with great friends out there sharing information, we are starting to catch on.

Last and probably least…

We seem to be doing well with checking off the to do list for our travels. We put everything in storage this weekend and for this last week in October we are living in an empty apartment sleeping on our memory foam mattress (on the floor)  We still have our Internet and computers, so we will be fine. Oh and we kept our wine glasses out of storage for now so we got everything we need!

We have our Visa’s, our shots, our medications and we are completely. packed  Our addresses are changed and forwarded, our banking is set and our insurance is confirmed.

It is funny though. Everything is falling into place and yet we both feel a little anxious and unsettled. I feel like there is a lot to be done, but really there isn’t.  Actually, this week should be nice. I don’t have to worry about packing or making a tonne of phone calls. I don’t have a giant pile of things that need to be tackled and yet, I keep feeling like I have so much to do.  It is difficult to adjust to suddenly having very little to do.

I actually think that I will be able to catch up on reading other people’s blogs, doing my lessons at MatadorU and finally doing some research on India and Sri Lanka.

It has been so crazy and hectic for the past couple of months, that it is going to be a welcomed change in  the final weeks leading up to our travels to enjoy the company of friends and family and to slow down a bit and relax.

Wow!

I’m chuckling over the wine glasses – when we packed up our place in Prague before departing on our trip, we realized we had a stock of good French wine from a wine festival in France that we were saving for a “special day.” We realized, what’s a more special occasion than departing on a journey around a world. So, we were drinking well our last couple of weeks : ) Enjoy your last week with some nice wines – you certainly won’t find those in Central Asia and many places you’re going to soon!

As for a web host, I’d recommend Host Gator. We switched to them earlier this year when Dreamhost couldn’t handle our site. We’ve hardly had any outages and customer service is great (24-hours, too).

One last piece of advice in your last days – get your fill of your favorite foods and just enjoy the time with family and friends.

Hi Audrey, thanks for the information about the host. I will look into them. I love that you enjoyed your fine wine before leaving and we will definitely eat our favorite foods. We are already having a laugh at the weight we are putting on, It is like we are getting ready for hibernation. We are eating everything, know that in a few short weeks, we will be on a very different diet. Cheers!

I’d strongly recommend Media Temple, I’ve been using them for years. I’ve also got some of my own hosting services available, if you’re interested feel free to shoot me an email.

Oh, one last thing for travel preparation. One of the most used pieces of equipment in our packs – a multi-plug (we use a Belkin 3-plug with 2 USB chargers) and an extension cord. Makes working in cafes and hotel rooms with only one plug possible. And, you can charge all your gadgets at once :)

Enjoy all that food and time with friends! We put on weight when we visited the States and Europe last year as well :)

    • davendeb says:

Thanks! That is a great suggestion. We learned that the hard way in Africa. We had so many things to charge and just didn’t have the plug space. Another guy that was traveling with us had the multi-plug and we were so jealous. We looked for one at every town we stopped in, but of course we couldn’t find one. It was the first thing on our list when packing this time, thank for the reminder and letting others know about this essential travel item:)

  4. So sorry to hear about those electronics mishap. But like you said at least you found out about it while you are still in Canada not in India.

Thanks Amy. It is not the end of the world by any means, we just like to share our mistakes with people so that they don’t make the same ones that we did. I told everyone I would keep them up to date on the Iphone. I bet that they didn’t think we would have an update before we even left the continent though:)

    Hi Dave and Deb

I know a lot of folks don’t like 1&1, but I’ve been with them for over 5 years and have been really happy with the service and price (after having been through at least half a dozen other hosting companies that I didn’t like).

My suggestion for moving – hire someone who is a Wordpress specialist/genius (I can probably give you a few names) and use temporary ftp/ssh logins for both old and new host companies, then once you’ve confirmed that all has been transferred over to your satisfaction (including the DNS switch) you can cancel the old host account and delete the temp logins.

Good luck with everything – I’m really excited to start hearing your reports from India!

Thanks Trisha! That was exactly the advice we needed. We aren’t so worried about changing hosts, we are however worried about making some huge mistake during the transfer and losing everything, so hire someone we will! :-) I am going to talk things over with Dave tonight and I think that we are going to make the switch happen soon. We have 15 days until Bluehost expires.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I am going to look into each host that you have mentioned. All of you have such great websites that I think any one of your hosts will be great. Much appreciated! We will let you know what we decide in our next weeks update. Cheers!

So glad that things are calming down for you guys now, I know the past week has been incredibly stressful for you. Thanks for sharing the iPhone issues – I am thinking of getting an unlocked one too and now I know to just get one already unlocked. Cheers and enjoy the wine!

    • davendeb says:

Thanks Shannon, Yep, get an unlocked one all the way. We thought that we knew what we were doing and then it didn’t work out. The good news is a lot of people are inquiring on craiglist, so I think we will get it sold easily.

  7. hostgator is the best host! My site got slow and they auto installed wp-super cache to help speed up the traffic…and they are never done….and real affordable!

hostgator all the way! i recommend them in the ebook lol

Thanks Matt! I should have gone back to look through the ebook about hosting. I remember reading about your host when I bought it, but I was already with bluehost and had several months until renewal, so I kind of skipped over that section at the time. My bad!!!

  8. Bethany says:

This is so funny – I feel the same way and have had several mishaps lately myself. First I broke the sink on the sailboat we are living on and now the toilet broke. hahaha… I have been doing some major gear shopping lately too and it’s amazing how much time it takes and how many little snags you hit along the way, like your battery incident. If you have time let me know what you decide on for a host. I have bluehost as well and my contract is about to expire in a couple months and i’ve been wondering what to do myself.

I can’t wait to read your posts when you guys hit the road – so exciting!!!

    • davendeb says:

Bethany! Oh no, your mishaps are worse than ours, I am basically just sharing information and we really aren’t too upset, just showing how stupid we are:) That is a bummer about the toilet and sink! I will keep you posted on the host for sure!

  9. Jennifer says:

Your (mis)adventures sound similar! We also felt that we were being tested before we went on our RTW trip…almost forcing us to confirm that despite the challenges, this was what we *really* wanted to do!

Funny about the firmware though…reminds me of a quote by George Bernard Shaw: “Do not do unto others as you would that they should do unto you. Their tastes may not be the same.” :-)

Finally, on hosting, we use Dreamhost and haven’t had one problem with their service. Very easy to use and set up and has never had an outage.
