The Grand Place in Brussels

We didn’t have a lot of time to spend in Brussels. It was the first stop on the Mongol Rally and we had the opportunity to meet with one of our online friendsCheeseWeb, a blog about Expat Life in Belgium. They served us a feast the night before and before we had to say goodbye, we took a walk around the beautiful city of Brussels in Belgium.

We had been to Brussels before nearly a decade ago. Sometimes time can play tricks on the mind causing memories to change with each passing year. When it came to the beauty of Brussels main square, that wasn’t the case. It was just as exquisite as we remember.

The Grand Place still stands as one of our favourite squares in Western Europe. There is something about it that takes my breath away when I step foot onto it’s cobblestone street.

The Grand Place is looking better than ever as it is being restored and the buildings are looking shiny and new.

It is abuzz with life. Artists and vendors are set up in the square, people are milling about and restaurant patrons are eating in the surrounding cafes.

I feel that this photograph captures the essence of the square as well as our travels through Europe this time around. We are constantly on the move and are traveling fast absorbing Europe’s beauty as quickly as we can.

Just like the people moving in the shot below.

  1. The Grand Place is one of our favorite places in Brussels as well. We got the chance to visit on our trip there in 2004.

Great job capturing the atmosphere and the hustle and bustle of the place in your photo. Love the pop of color and detail in architecture brought out by your HDR!
    Well done!

  4. I love the detail in the clouds and the motion blur on the sides. Did you use a long exposure for this shot?

  7. Your photo of the Grand Place is stunning. Do they do that awesome sound and light show there all year round? Or is that just around Christmas time? I stopped there for a couple of nights on the way back from Germany and love it!

    • Hi Heading there, I don’t know if they do the light show year round, we didn’t see it and didn’t know about it. But I can imagine how beautiful it would be at Christmas all decked out in holiday cheer. We’d love to go back and enjoy a Christmas season around Belgium and Germany, we hear that they really get into the spirit of things.
