The Palace of Versailles was something we had always ended up missing on our trips to France. Not for any particular reason it just ended up that way.
So we made sure to make a detour this time. To my dismay is was cloudy and stormy that day so I thought photographs would not be very interesting.
I decided to make it a black and white day.
But after looking at the images when we got back to the hotel the skies were so dramatic I had to keep them as colour. The Dragon Fountain of Versailles caught my eye. It is not as famous as the others but just as impressive!
What do you think?

A STUNNING Photo! Where are all of the others at Versailles???
Thanks Marylouise! I know that you love Dave’s photos. Check out his photography site at and check out our Photostory Friday photography posts under Advice, Photography, photostories. Great meeting you in Paris!
I agree – stunning photo! I do think it would also look very impressive as a black & white, and would love to see that version also.
Versailles itself is an impressive place, but I found it hard to photograph (although I’m sure that’s just due to a lack of skill on my part)…there are so many small, but extremely ornate, rooms that I just couldn’t get the right angle or lighting…..I’m really looking forward to seeing more of your photos since Dave seems to have a great eye and the right skill!
Hey Dave, how about a post from you with some photography tips for the rest of us?

Trisha, he is definitely going to put tips together this summer. Great request!
I wish that we could have gone inside. When we were there it was closed:( We showed up on a Monday and we should have known better!) We didn’t even think about the fact that most museums are closed in Paris on Mondays. Luckily, the gardens are incredible! Dave will probably be posting the black and white version on his website when we manage to get ourselves organized:-) I will let you know!
It looks very moody with those skies. I like the contrast with the green shades!

Thanks Gourmantic. All the rain definitely helped to make the gardens lush and green.
I think you are right about the clouds, looks amazing. From the lighting and from the clouds the hedges really stand out to me.

Thanks Mark. It ended up being perfect lighting for photography. It was sunny for awhile and then the clouds rolled in quickly, but the sun was peaking through enough in the foreground to light up the hedges. I only had a window of a couple of minutes to grab the shot before it became completely grey.
Omg, this photo is OUTSTANDING!

Thanks Candice. It was surprising how dramatic the sky was that day and with all the rain, the greens are so lush and deep. The contrast was amazing.
The Dragon fountain of Versailles really looks stunning in the cloudy background.
