“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Confucius. Sometimes, in life there are too many ‘what if’ moments. Moments where we find ourselves questioning motives, desires, yearnings, personal histories, and the what if I do, do it. What then?
I was on the phone with one of my best friends. She had just found out the news that she had been selected to lead a research and development team in Peru for 6 months. After my congratulations I just blurted out, “I’m going to visit you”.
Vang Vieng in Laos is one of those places that you hear mixed reviews about. Some people have the time of their lives while others can’t wait to get out of there. The general apprehension is that if you’re a twenty year old backpacker wanting to get drunk and go tubing down a river, you’ll love it. If you fit into any other category, you’ll hate the place. I wanted to find out for myself.
Determined to celebrate my special birthday in grand style, I scoured books and brochures for the perfect place. Tutti a Tavola, a cooking school and somewhere to stay in a remote part of the Chianti Hills in Tuscany was an easy decision. A phone call later, our travel plans were under way.
I was climbing a tree. By itself this was fine – I like climbing trees. If only I hadn’t mentioned this fact to the boss of the animal refuge where I was volunteering… I never would have ended up in this situation.
If we can make it in Japan, we can make it everywhere! That was our mantra back in 1996 when we headed to the land of the Rising Sun. Everybody told us Japan was such a strange country. Indeed, Japan was not a very popular travel destination back in 1996, mainly because it was seen as too different and not many people were able to speak English.
In 2008 we took a big challenge and road our bicycles from Cairo to Cape Town. It cost us a lot of money and we didn’t know how things would turn out after our 4 months in Africa. All we knew was that we needed to change our lives, so we took a chance and [...]
Its the time of year when we take stock of our lives and re-evaluate where we stand in our journey through this great earth. Maybe it is the cold weather or the shorter days or maybe it is just the January blues that make people decide to start each year with a fresh new set [...]
Whether you’re sat at your desk willing the clock hands to read 5pm, realising that your relationship has run it’s course or just frustrated with your life as it is, we’ve all had moments when we just want to give up.
Four months before I turned 31, I was thinking of something different to do on my birthday. The mere mention of “indigenous tribe” was so appealing I organized a team of 22 individuals for this adventure to the Philippines.
Here in a small fishing village on the coast of Brazil, nobody spoke English. I came here on a volunteer vacation. This was my first visit to a location where neither was English prevalent nor did I know the language.
As I stood, speechless, at the top of Mount Roy in New Zealand, triumphant laughs and hugs were exchanged as we took turns taking photos of one another.I had only been living in Wanaka for a few months but it had become my home, and these people, my family.
Travel bloggers cover the whole spectrum of writing and here are a few highlights of some great reads that we came across this week. As the weather grows colder it takes a little longer to get yourself up and running on a Saturday morning
I gazed over at my Italian host mother, Rebecca. Over the course of the last four months we had become family.During my first few days in Florence, I told Rebecca how nervous I was to start my internship at a Florence museum
The other day Dave and I were asked a simple question by a person at a well known financial podcast that will be interviewing us in the near future. (stay tuned for more details) The Question was, What do you sell, what is your product? Dave didn’t hesitate for one second. He answered inspiration…. and he [...]
It is hard to believe that our summer at home is coming to an end soon and in a short time we will be back on the road exploring the world. Not before we meet with fellow travel lovers for an inspiring evening of Meet Plan Go though. If you have ever had the dream of taking an extended travel but don’t have the resources or means to make it happen, Meet Plan Go is for you. The event is completely free and it is going to be one motivating evening. We are excited to be a part of a panel of travellers that we have admired in the past and can now call them our friends and mentors.
We wrap up this media week with songs that inspire travel. Like all of our lists this past week this was not easy to narrow down our choices to only six. There are many other songs out there that make us want to travel. Even as I write this introduction I am thinking of others but I won’t bore you with my thoughts, let us know if you have any songs that make you want to visit a country or city.
Here it comes, the post that almost every travel blog has tacked in the past. But it is media week after all and how can one talk about all the different mediums that inspire travel and not talk about our favorite travel books? The books that we have come up with in our list are just the books that we like. The books about travel, a specific country or a journey that have either inspired us to visit them, make a difference or try something new.
One of the things we love the most about travel is meeting new people. While we could compile a list of a hundred people that we have met that have become great friends and have been an inspiration, we wanted to share with you a few of the special people that have really stood out and touched our hearts during our travels around the world over the years. 1. Mary Louise in Paris, France, 2. Hussein in Udaipur, India, 3. Ajith in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, 4. Abdulla Ahmed in Wadi Halfa, Sudan, 5. Kul and Mim Das Tamang in Kathmandu, Nepal
Hussain has a story, almost 20 years in the making. Hussein is the manager of our guest house here in Udaipur. He has been leasing this property for 9 years and running the guest house while learning all about the hotel business. Years ago, his father bought this piece of land for 40,000 rupees to build a house. He never did build the house, but Hussain has been chipping away at a giant rock by hand etching out his dream hotel. It is finally almost ready to open.
