One of our favorite places in India was the ancient city of Hampi. We had told you about this place way back in December, but as Dave was going through his photos the other day, we decided that words just couldn’t do justice to this spectacular site. What makes Hampi unique is that while it is a world heritage site and the ruins are impressive, the people of the land live, breathe and work among its walls.

From the Taj Mahal to the summit of Adams Peak, temples are a way of life in these spiritual countries. We will be seeing many more I am sure, but here is a photo story of some of the great temples that we have witnessed on our Asian Adventure.

Climbing in Hampi? Who Knew?

Climbing in Hampi? Who Knew?

Dave and I love to rock climb. For a couple of years in our life, we climbed regularly all around the Toronto area. We were regulars at Joe Rockheads climbing gym in the city and we hung out with our climbing friends to tackle the local crag on the weekends. That is why when we heard that there was bouldering in Hampi, we just had to check it out for ourselves.

Lakshmi the Elephant Takes a Bath in Hampi

Lakshmi the Elephant Takes a Bath in Hampi

We arrive just as Lakshmi the elephant makes her way to the bottom of the steps. The washing goes on for at least half an hour. She lies in the river content to be scrubbed by here handler. Flopping her ears and closing her eyes, she wakes only to stand up and turn over to have the other side bathed. After the bath, you can be blessed yourself by Lakshmi. Put a coin into the snout of her trunk and after she hands it to her master, she gives you a tap on your head. As I receive my blessing, A young boy helping the elephant handler whispers to me to ask if I would like a ride on Lakshmi.

We set our alarms to see Lakshmi the temple elephant of Hampi. It was something that we had wanted to witness for years. An elephant being washed in the river by her master. We thought that we had missed our chance because we didn’t go to the elephant sanctuary in southern India. But as luck would have it, in Hampi they wash Lakshmi daily.

It was a wild and special day that is right up there with any moment in our travels. A Chance Encounter with a Snake Charmer

I knew that there were snake charmers in the world. I just didn’t expect to see one. It happened at the most random time. We had just come back from riding Lakshmi the elephant in Hampi and when we turned there corner to walk back to our hotel, we saw him. Squatting in a laneway was a man with three cobras watching him work. They were beautiful. Sitting up in their baskets they were mesmerized by his flute.

Driving up to the ancient ruins surrounded by giant boulders in our rickshaw from Hospet is spellbinding. We have witnessed many ruins in our travels, but for some reason, this place feels special. And it is special. Hampi (pronounced humpy) is one of the few World Heritage Sites that still functions as it has for centuries.
