
When travelling to India, you will see many Jain temples scattered throughout the country. The temples that we visited had many a marble pillar. The Ranakpur Temple has 1444 marble pilars to be exact and is considered one of the finest Jain temples in the country.

There is a very real problem in Asia. Elephants and humans are not getting along and in Sri Lanka, it is more apparent than anywhere else. The Human Elephant Conflict is a term that defines a growing problem in Asia. Habitat is shrinking daily and humans are encroaching on the territory of elephants. At the same time, many poor farmers haven’t changed their daily lives for hundreds of years but their crops and villages are being threatened. As urbanization takes hold, the elephants have nowhere else to go and end up in fields searching for food.

Here is a man that has been in 50 documentaries, advised Sigourney Weaver for Gorilla’s in the Mist, had a character based on him in the film and is in high demand as a public speaker around the world.

We arrive just as Lakshmi the elephant makes her way to the bottom of the steps. The washing goes on for at least half an hour. She lies in the river content to be scrubbed by here handler. Flopping her ears and closing her eyes, she wakes only to stand up and turn over to have the other side bathed. After the bath, you can be blessed yourself by Lakshmi. Put a coin into the snout of her trunk and after she hands it to her master, she gives you a tap on your head. As I receive my blessing, A young boy helping the elephant handler whispers to me to ask if I would like a ride on Lakshmi.
