Who would have thought that a chance meeting in New York would lead us to this day? It seemed like a good idea at the time. Two well known blogs come together for a media blitz where we drive a car to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally all for charity.
It was Friday morning at 11:00 am when we arrived at the Russian border to get ready to leave the country. We knew that the Mongolian border closed on Sundays and if they had the inkling to take a long weekend, it could close on Saturday too.
This past week someone wrote a comment stating that they would love to hear more about the Mongol Rally preparations. I’m not one to ignore our readers, so here you go.
Angkor Wat in Cambodia was a place of distant wonder for us back in 2000. People told us about khmer ruins in the jungle, but we never thought we would never get there. It was 3 years later when we came back to this part of the world and truly explored the countries of the region that we made it to these fabled temples.
Be There, July 2011! Why? Because we are joining Sherry Ott of Ottworld and Rick Griffin of Midlife Road trip on an epic drive through two continents and 10,000 miles. The Mongol Rally the adventure we have been waiting for. This was made for us and to actually find other people that want to do it too is a major bonus. Our team of crazy, travel loving bloggers will push ourselves to the limit driving through deserts, over mountains, on non-existent roads and through bandit country (although I don’t know which country that may be!)
It was about 5am in the morning and we had been climbing for several hours in the dark. We were on our way up the side of Gunung Batur, one of Bali’s active volcanos, when the sun peaked over the horizon to give us this stunning sunrise view of Gunung Rinjani on the island of Lombok.
Malaysia’s intrinsic colourful contrasts climax in spectacular Kuala Lumpur. The vast capital city is a zenith of culture and a dynamic urban metropolis. KL pulsates with shiny skyscrapers, feverish wet markets, lively pedestrian malls, venerable mosques and a wonderful, chaotic array of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
I know that this is going to sound strange, but we have big fears about actually traveling and running a travel blog. Last year was the first time that we had a blog while traveling and it wasn’t exactly professionally run. We went for days without updating and we hardly ever included photos. We were in some very remote areas of Africa after all and hey, we were just posting for friends and family to keep them informed of how things were going.
We have done so many bone head moves traveling and have had so many close calls in potentially dangerous situations, that I had to add a part two to our list. So here are some more ridiculous situations that could have gone bad, but luckily didn’t and now we can laugh about them. 5; Having [...]
Packing for an extended travel can be very tricky indeed. It is one thing to pack for a vacation where you are staying in one resort and not moving for the week or two that you are away. You can pack all you want because you only ever have to deal with your luggage at the airport and transfers where you have trolly’s and valets to help you out. But it is completely another experience to pack for a travel that will keep you on the move for months on end.
