I enjoyed your post about diving in Belize. We went there for the first time this past summer and I just fell in love with the country. I’m blogging about my adventures there now, http://tripspicsandtales.blogspot.com/, in my new blog. We snorkeled at Shark Ray Alley and I agree it was amazing. I went back a couple days later and did the DSD – discover scuba course and am now hooked!!

I just found your blog today and will be following along! You two have some amazing journeys!!! I’m looking forward to reading about them.

Belize is definitely way more laid back. Staying on Caye Caulker is much cheaper than Ambergris Caye and you can access the same dive sites. If you want to get your open water certification for cheap, consider Utilla in Honduras. It is very cheap to become certified and the diving is great too. Belize has beautiful dive sites including the blue hole and it even has superb snorkeling in shark ray alley. I don’t know how things are in Mexico after the hurricane. All I can say is that when we were there it was fantastic. Good luck to you!

Hello-

I read on your website that you dove in Belize this year. My boyfriend and I are planning on going diving in December either in Belize or around the Mayan Rivera in Mexico. Which would you recommend? Both of us are wanting some cheaper accommodations, and laid-back scenery than a fancy resort; however, I still need to get my open water certification. I’ve also heard that diving around the Mayan Rivera is not great right now because of the recent hurricane, but I was leaning toward Mexico because I’ve heard that it’s cheaper than Belize. I would really appreciate an opinion from a pro- much thanks in advance!

Ok, we are living parallel lives, only at different times. I did that exact route, step by step, minus the diving equipment! Really, I loved belize city even though the hotel i stayed at was a half whore house, i had no clue, if you can believe it the taxi driver recommended it, i wonder why.

I spend time in Caye Caulker and swam with the nurse sharks. It’s funny, i told my 5 year old that story and now he repeats it to everyone as though he was there with me, it’s so cute:) and just goes to show that i have to return and take him with me!

Yes we met them both. Deb was from Canada and Dave was from Belize. It was pretty cool and they were very nice. We left our dive gear there for a while as we traveled around to Guatemala.
