Our Mongol Rally Team Needs a Name!

mongol rally car from 2004

Just some of the conditions we will face!

Be There, July 2011!

Why? Because we are joining Sherry Ott of Ottsworld and Rick Griffin of Midlife Road trip on an epic drive through two continents and 10,000 miles.

The Mongol Rally the adventure we have been waiting for. This was made for us and to actually find other people that want to do it too is a major bonus. Our team of crazy, travel-loving bloggers will push ourselves to the limit driving through deserts, over mountains, on non-existent roads and through  bandit country (although I don’t know which country that may be!)

All in a car that is ill suited for the extreme conditions it will be facing.

We have a lot of work ahead of us this year.  We need to plan our route, find a car and learn how to fix any problem that may happen on the road.  This isn’t your family sedan “Brady Bunch” road trip, this is as extreme as it gets. We are driving around 1/3 of the earth all while Blogging, photographing videoing and surviving the event.   All while raising money for a great cause, the Christina Nobel Children’s Foundation.

But there is one small item that needs to be taken care of before we begin.

We need a name!

For the first time ever, we are teaming up with two other well known travel personalities for this incredible journey. We all have our own unique personalities, areas of travel expertise and our own individual niches.

How can we come up with one name to fit us all?  We need some help and who better to ask than the people that know us best. The people that have followed our adventures from cycling through Africa to the high peaks of the Himalayas. We have read some very creative comments over the past year and know that you will be able to come up with far better ideas than we ever will.

Contest.

We need some suggestions for a name that encompasses not the spirit of the Mongol Rally, but the spirit of our three online personalities.

Submit your ideas for a team name in the comments of this post, on our Facebook pages or via twitter (include #weneedaname hashtag in your submissions) by Monday October 25th. The three of us will go through the submissions together and choose our favorite.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll get a super-duper, top-secret, authentic, gift from Mongolia to be sent in September 2011 after we arrive there.  You will get a huge shout out and thank you with a link back from us all and our undying gratitude.

But first, you need to find out a little about our partners in crime.

These are two very accompished and fun people. We are so excited that they actually want to do this with us! What an honour. Read on and you will see why we are so excited!

mongol rally partner sherry ottSherry Ott is a refugee from corporate IT who is now a long term traveler, blogger and photographer. Sherry has been blogging about her travels on Ottsworld: Travel and Life Experiences of a Corporate America Runaway for 4+ years. She also is a co-founder of the career break travel site, Briefcase to Backpack and the in-person travel networking events Meet, Plan, Go! – yes, she’s a busy person.  She likes to travel to the off-the-beaten path places and challenge herself with things most people wouldn’t do such as learn how to ride a motorbike in Vietnam, volunteer and live in a buffalo barn in Nepal, travel with her father (yikes!), and participate in this Mongol Rally.  She is a nomad without a home and is the only one of our team who has actually been to Mongolia before!

  3. The first name that comes to mind is The Bucket List Brigade, because I know how much Rick loves the term “bucket list.”

Do you allow multiple entries? If so, I will try to think of more ideas because I’d really like a prize from Mongolia :)

    • YES – put in as many entries as you’d like! You’re off to a great start!

    • Good one Liz. It is definitely one for the ultimate bucket lists. And yes, if you can think of other ideas send them on! We need all the help we can get.

  4. Simple … you should be known as “The Golden Thumbs of the Twittering Horde” and seek sponsorship from every single social media outlet known to mankind.

Or, you could be “The Drivin’, Snappin’, Bloggin’ Fools” to honor the rally itself, the photos you’ll be taking, the posts you’ll be making from far flung corners of the world, and the general consensus that anyone who attempts an adventure like this is probably a couple bubbles off of level (not that it’s a bad thing, mind you).

Or you could use the direct approach — “A Chick, A Rick, and Two Canucks” — simple, elegant, gets the point across.

Already looking forward to Mongol mania,

    • I have to admit – A Chick, A Rick, and Two Canucks was the first name to make me laugh out loud!

  6. Ah the Mongol rally, I signed up 4 and 2 years ago but my team mates all pulled out so I never went :-( It’s still on the list though.

How about for a name ‘Devastatingly Social Deviant Roomies’ Takes into account your use of social media, being good at it, being sneaky enough to get a place on the mongol rally, and you’ll be together through it. Also the Acronym is the initials of all your names :-) – yes it took me a while to come up with that.

    • Bummer about the Mongol Rally. That is the one thing we were excited about doing it with other travel bloggers. We can pretty much expect everyone to go through with it because we are all nuts together! If we talked about it with some friends at home, I am sure that it would sound great at the time, but never really happen, but when we talked about it with Sherry in New York…Michaela from briefcase to backpack had it taped on video and posted on the net the following week. There was no going back now!
I like the DSDR idea. It covers all the bases. Yes, you did work hard at that one!

  7. I was going to say “Four Bloggers and a Desert” but think “Four Bloggers and a Dream” is better.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. I like it, a play on four Weddings and a Funeral? Maybe we could do Four Bloggers and a tin bucket.

  8. “Push up and keep it tight at the back” is my standard fantasy football team name, So on a football theme you could have “Mongols Galore”, or “Mongol-gol-gol!”. My favorite one, which I think was charity rallies, is “Farce India”.
