I Stand Alone in Emmental

Cows, Cheese, Lederhosen!

We saw them all during our e-bike adventure through the Swiss countryside.

It was the typical scene one thinks of when picturing Switzerland of cute, manicured farms scattered throughout rolling, green hills. Even the grey skies couldn’t take away from the country’s beauty.

We had been riding through the region of Emmental for a couple of hours when the rain came down. Instead of ducking for cover, we zipped up our coats, pulled up our hoods and carried on over the nearly deserted narrow lanes cutting through the landscape.

The stormy sky made for a more interesting scene than the usual tailored shots that one thinks of when envisioning Switzerland and it was this lone tree that caught my eye.

I decided to process the photograph in black and white to capture the chill of the day. So I hope you enjoy this image. It may not be they way one normally thinks of Switzerland, but it is an image that will always come to mind when I think about our day, peddling with power.

  1. Uhh. That tree is lonely. This is not a typical Switzerland which I think is very forestry. Still, I like the black and white image which makes the picture dramatic.

  3. It’s usually one of the best things you can capture when you visit the country beside the artistic scenes and houses by the countryside.

  5. I like this picture. Really much. Why not to show Switzerland from different view. Both are amazing (and I had no idea that you can find there the scenery like this…)

    • Hi Annie, we agree. It’s nice to show things that are a bit different than the usual scene. This tree was actually standing alone in the middle of rolling green hills in farm country which was very typical of Switzerland, but then we cycled along this one road that was free of houses and cows and as the weather rolled in, this is what we saw.
