Who made a New Year’s Resolution this year? We did and it is to learn conversational Spanish once and for all. If you’ve had ‘learn a language’ on your things to do before you die list for years we can help. Thanks to Online Trainers we’ve have three language courses to give away and you can learn while we learn too?
We’ve been telling ourselves for years that we were going to learn a language, and I have a good feeling that 2013 is going to finally be our year.
We had the opportunity to learn Spanish, French, German, Italian or Dutch. We were considering French, but after a decade of French classes at school here in Canada with very little results, we thought it was time to move onto another language. Besides, Spanish is music to our ears.
Plus, we’ve spent a lot of time in Spain this past year and are planning on visiting more of Mexico and South America in the coming year so it’s time for us to be able to have a conversation with the locals when we travel. It’s embarrassing to be stuck with the basics like “Una Cerveza Por Favor.” or Vino Tinto Por Favor. You get the idea, all we can do is order food and drinks and we want more!
For the next 6 months, we’re going to be studying up on our online language course and we want to give you the opportunity to learn a language of your choice too. Online Trainers has offer us three language courses to give away to our readers. For three months, you’ll have the opportunity to learn a language too!
Simply leave a comment below telling us what language you want to learn and why.
Tell us why you want to learn a particular language and you could win a three month language course valued €300 ($395 CAD and USD)
Languages to choose from are
We’ll be choosing the winner so try to be compelling. Tell us why you want to learn a language, tell us about your upcoming travels or how you have always dreamed of learning the language of love. Maybe you want to propose to your loved one in Italian. Ooh, That’s Amoré. Maybe you are relocating soon and need to learn a new language or maybe you’ve always wanted to understand those Mexican Soap Operas once and for all!
Tell us what ever you like. We want you to win and learn a language just like us.
We’ll be giving updates throughout the year to let you know how our training is going and will be reviewing Online Trainers ourselves.
Reasons Online Trainers looks great to learn a language.
So, enter today to learn a language this 2013. It may be the best New Year’s Resolution You’ve ever made.
Contest ends January 10th. We’ll be contacting winners via email and you have 48 hours to reply, or else we will be choosing a second person to take your place.
I want to continue my italian learning after working in Italy for three months. I tried one month of Language School first, but to learn italian when I know nothing and the lessons are in italian is a mess… :p I want to go back there and work with the great people there, but I want to know when I suddenly hear my name and then laughter from everyone if I just hade a joke on my behalf
I would really love to learn Italian so that I can communicate with my family. I can understand some, so I think I’m off to a good start. I would also love to speak French because as a Canadian, I already feel that I should be able to speak French…but I don’t. I would love to be able to go to Quebec without getting a lecture on the fact I am a non-French speaking Canadian.
I want to learn Spanish so I can do more Paradigm Shift Projects in South America!!! After 5 weeks shooting “From the Earth to the Pot” on urban agriculture and food security in Lima, I could understand quite a lot, but felt like such an idiot when I couldn’t ask the people I was interviewing ANYTHING in Spanish aside from “¿dónde están los chicos guapos?”… And I also told a guy at an airline check-in counter “Estoy caliente” which did NOT have the meaning I thought it did, although it did make him blush and giggle like a school girl which made it worth it… Poor Andrea almost died of embarrassment.
I promise to put it to GREAT use and use my new language skills for social and environmental good (and not just to pick up cute boys!).
I want to learn German, because I not only need to communicate with my neighbors, but most importantly, I want to know HOW people in my town think.
A language is not only something used to deliver a message. A language says a lot of the culture of the people who speak it.
There is a moment when you study a foreign language when you actually start thinking in that language, and that is a terribly rewarding moment, because you notice that when you’re talking in this second language you are choosing structures, expressions, etc., that are not even present in your mother language. And that can only be partly explained with different grammar issues. People speak differently than your homeland fellas do because they also think differently.
In other words, you realize that you’re absorbing the culture as well. You’re no longer a complete stranger. You start being ALSO a citizen of another country in your heart. Isn’t that one of the most fulfilling feelings a person can experience?
In a few weeks I am going to House sit in Spain for about two months. I am really excited because I’ve never really been to Spain. And beside my wish to work on my website and to continue my yoga studies – I really want to explore Andalusia, and learning a bit spanish would for sure enrich my experience there -
I would love to learn German! Actually, my husband really wants to learn German and I would love to win this for him. He has checked out online courses for about 5 years, and always comments, “I would love to learn German, BUT we don’t have an extra $500″ (..extra money goes into the vacation pot). Greg, has downloaded children’s translation games, for our 4 year old – and he plays them more than she does. We are planning a return trip to Germany/ Austria this year, and this gift would be the icing on the cake! Danke!
I want to learn Dutch! There are a couple of reasons: I love the Netherlands, my ancestors are from South Holland, and.. I’m planning a move there in September to be with a very special man. I am super excited about the move and am hoping to learn some Dutch before I move over there in hopes that I’ll be able to find a job not long after my arrival (and finding my way around would be great too!).
I also think Dutch is a super cute language and as of right now, I only know words like “peanut butter” and “hot chocolate with whipped cream”. As I’m sure you’ll note, these aren’t exactly helpful words to get around the Netherlands!
After giving it my all in French classes during my high school years of so many moons ago, I would love to try again as an adult. I am working hard to achieve my dream of spending 3 months in Europe and this would be a fantastic addition to fulfilling my dream. Please pick me
have wanted to learn Italian for so many years but have only dabbled with some courses and have not really been able to concentrate completely on any course so far. My interest for learning Italian is that I love the Italian way of life and I hope to retire there to see in my final years of life
I want to learn Italian because I plan to do a couple of trips in Italy in the next months. I want to be able to talk with people and understand the culture without translation. As the trips are scheduled six months from now, I would love to spend the time learning this language.
Spanish. I’ve been saying it for years that I need to learn, especially as I have 2 Mexican clients, and my favorite places to travel are Central America, Mexico, and South America. Si, Si, Si! (And, hopefully a lot more than that after taking this course!) Gracias!
Sadness! None of those languages are useful for me- relocating to Thailand this year
Seeing as I have been dating a German man I met while traveling in Laos for over a year and my German vocab consists of “fart rocket” “rainbow” “stawberry” and “frying pan” I think it’s time I start really trying to learn this strange strange language!
It is high time this family hunkered down and learned a language together, and yes, that includes the 8 month old and the 3 year old in the house. My husband and I both took spanish in High School but never went any further. Both our paths took a more artistic bent, but I have always regretted not pursuing my studies more. On top of the benefits of adults and kids being bilingual it is also high time our family headed south of the border into Central and South America. We have focused on Asia, Europe and the US far too much. Our latin neighbors deserve a chance to show us how awesome they are for you families to visit. But being a mom makes learning a language tough. Running after two kids is insane, plus working from home means my schedule to do anything is next to nil. Having an on the go language program would be the best. I can sneak in time on the road, waiting at preschool pick up, etc. Either way, we will all learn it, one vocab word at a time.
I would love to learn Spanish as my new daughter-in-law is Spanish and they are soon to have a baby. The children will learn Spanish and English I want to be able to talk to my grandchildren in both of these languages
Hello lady and gent, first and foremost best of luck on attempting a second language. I have has a few Spanish classes but would like to learn more. I will be traveling to Bolivia at some point in my life and would love to help out the natives in anyway I can. I will be attending college this year and learning to become a conservationist. Much love. Safe travels
I know that I should want to learn Spanish because it is so useful, but Dutch speaks to me. Since my friend Janna moved to The Netherlands in the sixth grade, I’ve found the language compelling. Add to that the fact that I’ve only met three folks who speak Dutch in my entire traveling life, and suddenly lerning Dutch could qualify me as THE most interesting person in Alabama.
I want to learn Spanish, por favor! I’m in the saving stages of long-term travel through Central and South America and would love to learn at least the basics before I go. On my first trip to a Spanish-speaking country, I felt so horribly ignorant that I didn’t know the language. And, more importantly, I felt utterly disconnected from the people I wanted to connect with: the locals! Since I have another year before I’m heading off on my adventure, I really must learn more than “baño” and “cerveza”. Please help me!
I am not familiar with Online Trainers, but will have to check them out. Regardless of how good they may or may not be, in my experience it is a good idea to diversify your learning sources so you don’t get bored or frustrated. Based on my interest in, and study of, languages (Japanese, Spanish so far), I did detailed research on language learning methods and tools, focused on the self-learner. Check out the full article I wrote at: http://www.lengthytravel.com/foreign-language-study-a-language-learning-system/
I’ve been trying to learn to speak Spanish for years because I LOVE Latin America. I’ve purchased software, signed up for classes, and even tried tempting Spanish speaking friends to help out. My last attempt was a class at a local college where an instructor actually laughed out load in front of the class when I said Libra for Book…I don’t think it deserved such a response. Libra means Pound, but the word for book is Libro. I think that is a mistake any newbie could make. Eventually, I had to drop the class because my Grandfather passed away and it required me to be with the family. It’s probably a good thing. I don’t think the instructor and I would have got along much longer.
I would love to learn French! The wife and I are in the planning stages of an overland around the world trip. We have a 5 year goal to be debt free, prepare, and head out while our son is still at home with us. We only have until 2018 to learn it, so this would be helpful.
I would love to learn Spanish…not just learning a few cheeky phrases but to actually be fluent. I went to Bolivia 9 months ago and fell in love with South America. I volunteered on an eye surgical mission trip and all I can say is, it was a life changing experience. My only regret was that I had to rely on an interpreter to communicate with the patients. I was lucky enough to be travelling with a friend who spoke Spanish and I was very envious and in awe of her ability to interact with the local people. I plan on doing more volunteer work and a second language would be very helpful.
P.S. I have a facebook friend from Bolivia and I really want to stop having to click on the translate button to read her posts..:)
I would love to learn French as my cousins live in France and I would love to be able to communicate with them . I dream if visiting France and to soak up the culture and explore all the country, especially Paris. I have tried some online French training but it doesn’t seem to help me. I have tried to watch French films on television but can’t pick up the language. Learning French would be fantastic and we would be able to pursue our dream of going to France.
Je m’appelle, Lance. Oui, that is about the extent of it.
I want to learn French. My mom knew French when she was a school girl living in Malta. My grandmother traced our ancestry back to King Louis XIV, so there is a bit of family heritage to uphold. But, mainly my wife dabbled in it and we have a goal once our 3 boys get a little older and the youngest is giving a clean bill of health, we want to visit France. Not just the Palace at Versailles, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, although those are on the bucket list… but also the small towns to truly get a taste of the real France. All of that and our oldest is learning to spell and we wont be able to talk secretly around him soon, we need to learn a foreign language to stay ahead of him.
I want to learn Chinese
! Why?
Well, I LOVE traveling and I love languages (I already speak a few). I don’t speak all of them ‘perfectly’ but I can get around Spain, France, Italy and Germany and enjoy the local culture in a way that simply isn’t possible without some understanding of the language.
I’ve never been to China but it’s been in my list of places to visit for a while now. It’s such a big country and, from what I’ve heard, foreigners are very reliant on translators when they visit. I don’t want that to be the case for me. I want to see and feel the ‘real China’, go where other tourists can’t and venture way off the beaten track. (As I write, I’m day-dreaming already
).
There are so many languages I’d love to learn but you have to put them into some order of priority. So Chinese is next. (Russian might be next
… for pretty much the same reasons as wanting to learn Chinese.)
I would like to learn German. My inability to learn a new language keeps me from moving to mainland Europe. I would like to learn German, so that I would be able to get employment in that country.
I need to improve my Italian! I am now living in Tuscany with my husband who is Italian and we are expecting a baby at the end of May. We want our child to learn both English and Italian and so far I haven’t gotten past the basics. Taking a course will hold me accountable and help me actually understand the grammar instead of just repeating what I think I hear. And I want to talk to people I meet on the street without getting nervous beyond hi how are you and how much do I owe you. I met an amazing local designer yesterday and I wanted to ask all kinds of questions but I had to rely on my husband for the more difficult parts, and that really stunts a conversation. Help me engage the local community and be able to help teach our child Italian!
Hola! Spanish is spoken in so many countries in the world! I think knowing some basic Spanish would be beneficial for travelling all over the globe. I realized how little I understood when I bought a giant bottle of water to take with me in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. After pedalling a bike out into the hot desert, with a snowboard strapped to my back, I arrived at the base of a sand dune miles from the nearest town with not a lick of shade in site. I was hot and thirsty. I uncapped my water bottle ready for a gulp of salvation, when it exploded and doused me in a spray of carbonated H20! Oh no! Apparently Agua Con Gas is water with bubbles! Not the refreshing nectar I was hoping for while sandboarding in the Chilean desert. If I only knew how to read and speak Spanish a bit better.
I would Love to learn Italian because I love Italy and hope one day I could visit that country without any problems communicating with people from there. I want a curse that will help me, I think this will be a great opportunity.
Good luck learning Spanish!
I’d love to learn them all but German is close to my heart because half my family is still in Austria. I never learned and now I kick myself for it! I’d love to be able to visit my family and actually talk to them!
I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish and this year my New Year’s Resolution is to do just that and be fluent! I’ve taken Spanish courses several times before (you know, the kind where you go to a classroom one night a week for 3 hours and then don’t even think about it the rest of the time), and a few things have stuck, but to say I’m conversational is a stretch. So this year I am planning to plant myself in a Spanish speaking country (possibly Costa Rica?) and immerse myself for at least a month (maybe more?) so I will have no excuse not to learn the language and will need it to get around! My long term plan is to one day live in Central America, so being able to properly communicate is important! I’m so excited about this, and winning this online course would be a great way to get started before I head off! Well done on your resolution, I’m excited to see that there are more people on the same band wagon! : )
My daughter is a 4th grader at a German immersion school. I want to learn German so that when we visit there I won’t be left out of the conversations! And so she won’t be able to get into mischief
Italian! Italy is on my to-do list this year!! 2013!!
I MUST learn Spanish this year. I am returning home to California and really want the language barrier to be no more so I can help others and maybe even get help if needed. Also, Spanish is my best friend’s 1st language and I cannot tell you how frustrating it is for me when she has something juicy to tell me and just starts yakking and I get only 3 out of every 10 words. When she has to repeat it in English, fuhgettaboutit, the thrill is gone.
And probably the most important reason, I would so appreciate being able to record a love song in Spanish.
It’s just such a beautiful language.
Gracias!
I have tried learning a few languages over the years and somehow English is the only one that stuck! German was too difficult for me, Latin didn’t really convince me, Swedish is too similar to German and Japanese is amazing but difficult when you get to a certain point.
My new challenge: learning Spanish and become fluent let’s say in one year. I have never leart it before so it is quite a challenge. I have been trying on and off for the past year, with books and movies but I have procrastinated too much. Now January 2013 is upon me and I need to learn it and be serious. Such a software would be so helpful. Why? Because in 8 months, I’ll embark for the trip of my life, a RTW trip starting in South America and probably Argentina. For now, I can talk about the weather, myself and food. It’s not gonna bring me very far, so I need to learn it!
Thank you for this great contest and good luck with your learning process!
My grandparents came to Canada from Italy in the 1930s. At the time, immigrants were not always very welcome here, so my grandmother did her best to learn English and was hesitant to speak her native tongue in public. However, as her English was somewhat limited, in her home she spoke to me in Italian when I was a young girl. As no one ever taught me the language, I always replied in English, though I could understand most of what she said.
In this way, she shared with me her passion for her garden and her cooking. I say share because they are two things that I came to be very passionate about, in large part due to her influence.
I would love to learn to speak Italian as it was the language that first taught me to love the smell of fresh earth, tomato plants, mint, roses, breaded zucchini, fresh tomato sauce, Italian pastries and my grandmother’s home.
Oh what a wonderful competition! I would LOVE to learn Italian – I have been with my Beloved (a Brit-Italian) for almost 10 years and we are planning to move to Florence later in 2013, once I’ve been given the all-clear (healthwise). I would also love to surprise him by answering the telephone one day and being able to conduct a full-blown conversation with him – that would make his year!!
I’m surprised portuguese is not part of the list.
But in lone with my preparations for the upcoming 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, i really want to learn the language.
Not only that, given that Brasil is part of the BRIC economy (together with russia, india, and china) –the big four — i want to equip myself with the capacity to speak with the next big shot.
But, i’m also interested in French. My 9 and 10-year old niece and nephew have started learning it. So it won’t help if they have someone to talk to.
Mucho bragado! Merci!
During the summer of 2011 I received the chance to study abroad as an undergraduate business student in Rome, Italy. Little did I know how majorly the Eternal City would come to impact my life. I traveled to places I’ve dreamed of going as a child, met people who changed my life forever, and even had the chance to meet some of my father’s family. When my father passed away in November of 2011, the only thing I could think of is my family in Rome. I graduated with my business degree in May of 2012 and I am traveling back to the city I feel in love with in April of this year! I would love this opportunity to learn more of the Italian language than the little bit I already know. Grazie Mille!
I have been trying to get to South America for over two years
Yet each time it’s planned life throws a wrench in my gears
2013 is the THE year, it is true
Come Hell or high water, I will climb Machu Picchu
I will backpack around for four months, or five
I will salsa, walk with penguins, hike and deep dive
I would have to know Spanish so I don’t look silly
Traveling from Peru to Argentina to Chile
Knowing how to speak Spanish would help a great deal
I could do so much then just order a meal
I could tango, cycle the edge and jungle trek too
Even guest post on The Planet D, a real dream come true
So I need to learn Spanish for this trip don’t you see?
¡Muchas gracias and thank you for the opportunity Planet D
Even though being in Montréal, I can’t speak a word of French. I visit my hometown and can’t communicate with anyone on their level. But really, I don’t think that is enough reason to pick up the language. I used to live in Germany and had conversational German down to a science at that time. I seem to have forgotten it in the 4 years I’ve been gone. If I haven’t used it much in the last 4 years, would it really be worth picking up again? No, I don’t think so.
. Plus, I have a dream of going to a game in Madrid. How will I ever make it around the city, yell during the match, and convince one of the players to date me if I don’t know Spanish?
However, I seem to have countless reasons to learn Spanish! While living in Germany, I met SO MANY South Americans. Half of my Facebook feed seems to be in Spanish and I would love to be able to communicate with them in their language, instead of always having our chats fall into English. I’m also finishing my last year in University and hoping to travel Central/South America as a graduation trip since it’s something that I haven’t experienced yet and it’s not too expensive coming from Toronto. Finally, (and probably my most useful reason for learning Spanish) Real Madrid! I am a huge Real Madrid fan. I watch all the games online but they only have commentary in Spanish
I took a semester of Spanish in my first year of University but, since I never continued, nothing really stuck. I’m thinking it’s a good time to REALLY learn it.
hello everyone ^^. i’m very happy when to be told with you. now it’s 0:20′ a.m in here. so goodmorning!!!! a nice day!
my mane is yen.
i’m learing english and i don’t many english words. so i can write wrong.
the fist thank for competition.it was like a dream when I came across this information. it gives me and other people can tell the desires.
with me . i relly learn english. why???? because i love it. i wish i could talk with many people in the world and understand lifestyle and culture of you. i’m shame when i don’t know which you say and which ongoing
sorry!!!
Italian. I have several Italian friends and I would love to be able to converse with them in their language and who wouldn’t want to go to Italy and speak the language?
I love, love, LOVE learning new languages.
I grew up in a Spanish neighborhood in NYC and I took high school Spanish courses in NYC public school but I still can’t fully comprehend and speak Spanish. I volunteer as a tax preparer for low income families and I would like to be able to communicate with them. The additional benefit is I would love to go visit South America and be able to communicate with the locals.
I would like to learn German because i really want to travel to Germany as soon as i finish my career. There’s a lot of educational opportunities in Germany to continue studying everything i like and if know how to communicate in German everything would be so much easier.
Language is my passion. Even as a child my aspiration was to be a polyglot. It still is. I have learned two Filipino dialects as my native language. As the schools I have attended provided me much opportunities to quench my passion, I took on English. Later in high school, I took two years of Japanese. Even after graduating, I am furthering my Japanese lessons on my own, informally. Just recently I also took a liking to the Korean language and thus far, I have been carrying out conversations with native Koreans comfortably. Please, help me quench my passion further. I want to learn French and be fluent at it. Your help will not be in vain. I work closely with students who has English as their second language. I tutor students from different countries who attend our local high school. I want to reach and teach these kids using their native tounge– French being one of them. I am already using all the other languages I know to reach those who speak them. Apart from being an academic teacher, I am also a full-time minister. I found a few God-fearing French speaking people in our place that needs to hear the truth from the Bible and to satisfy their spiritual needs. May you consider my request, and I thank you for your kind consideration.
Over the past decade I’ve traveled throughout 49 states and over 50 countries. I’ve been very fortunate to have a job that has taken me to all these places. Spending all this time traveling has made me realize the wasted opportunity that I had in high school and college to become fluent in a second language. Swahili, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Ahmaric, and so many other languages that I’ve learned pieces of, yet never fully can have a conversation. Well, the time has come for me to put 100% of my energy into learning another language. I’ve met a German girl and she has now become my wife. The reason that I would like to learn German isn’t so much for my wife, but to have a conversation with her mother.
I am a passionate language learner. Since Middle School I have been wanting to learn French properly. I had French at school until 10th grade, and loved it. I wanted to continue taking French classes during the IB, but since I was the only one in my whole grade who wanted to take French they didn’t offer it, so I was left with my limited knowledge of the language, which was devastating. Considering I speak three of the languages you are offering fluently (English, Spanish and German) and am studying Italian at university and just spent a year in Italy, I would be thrilled if I could finally learn French too! I am deciding between taking a French, Arabic or Portuguese course next semester at uni, and if I could learn French with one of these courses online that would mean that it would make my decision of which course to take at uni A LOT easier! And of course, it would mean that I will be able to finally fulfill my dream of learning French!! I love travelling, experiencing new cultures and learning new languages. And I love France. The food, the culture, the country, the language. I have been to France a couple of times and am planning on going many more, so it would be great if I could actually communicate with the people in their language!
My history with German is rather not very good (I took a course in highschool but the teacher wasn’t even fluent), but I have to choose Italian for this. Italian language is so passional, and romantic. It sounds generic but it’s really true. When I was in Italy for almost a month last year, I’ve realized that Italian would be really easy to pick up if only I get to it. Because it sounds amazing (the pronunciation and the hand gestures!), and I will love it every minute of it. It’s almost the opposite of my mother tongue (Korean) and that’s why I love it so much.
And most of all, I would love to be able to read Italian cook book in Italian. What can be better than that? (remember hazelnut gelato? mmm!)
I want to learn French. Already know Spanish and I think it’s the next most useful choice! Plus I love the way it sounds.
My family and I are on a quest to learn 5 languages in 5 years.
This year we’re studying Spanish. We’ve booked tickets to Panama to attend a Spanish-immersion school, and in the meantime we’re studying “todos los dias” in hopes that our three week immersion experience will boost us to fully-fluent Spanish speakers. We do not have any language learning software (all our spare pennies went to buy plane tickets), and it would help us so much!
I want our family to learn other languages because I want to give my children the opportunity for greater compassion and understanding, to realize that all cultures and languages are filled with people who belong to our human family, and that our common humanity means more than our differences.
“No hay atajo sin trabajo” (There is no shortcut without work). We have a lot of studying to do before this summer and we would be so grateful for your help in realizing our dream.
My goal is to learn Italian so I can visit my long last family this summer in Italy.
This year, I’ve decided to spend my birthday in Italy and connecting with family I’ve never met before. Most of these families live in small villages which don’t speak very much english so I would like to be able to speak to them in their own language. Plus, I’ve always found the Italian language to be so romantic.
After hearing my grandfather tell me stories of his time living in Italy, I can’t wait to walk the streets that he once did, and become lost in the beauty of this country.
I travel there in May and this three month course would be the perfect amount of time to learn it before my trip! My goal is to do my video blogs in Italian and I would love to show how well this online course worked
Couldn’t come at a better time! After several attempts at failed Spanish, my three weeks in Ecuador just last year really hit home with why I need to learn more. Far too many missed opportunities to truly connect and engage with locals. With several months of South American travels planned for later this year as well, I’ve promised myself I won’t miss out on the best part of travel again… connecting with locals!! If we end up in the same region of SA, we can compare notes and see how far we’ve come
