Traveling by train is difficult in India. It took us many tries to get it right. After 3 months of train travel, we finally figured out India Rail. It is the best way to get around the country and its cheap too.

We met some great people via India Rail. We made friends every time we stepped on the train. When we travelled general class people welcomed us with open arms. They gave us their seats and they watched out for us. They also stared a lot.

The best option for tourists travelling by train in India is to book a 2nd class sleeper. Your stuff will be safer as the compartments are more secure. It is also better for your lungs. If you travel in general class, you are blasted with fumes every time you go through a tunnel. Temperatures soar in India and you will want to be in a temperate climate when you are stuck on a train for 12 hours.
