We love Alberta. The more we go to Canada’s most beautiful province, the more we fall in love with it. Albertan’s understand how to enjoy winter. They get outside and live in it. They embrace the snow and the cold and they have a spectacular time doing it. Thanks to our work with Expedia.com and Travel Alberta, we had the chance to go back not once but twice in 2014. Our summer was spent on an amazing road trip through the South of the province, (see our Alberta Travel Guide for details) and our winter was spent taking part in incredible outdoor adventures. We thought the best way to get you as excited about Alberta in the winter is to show you our Instagram journey of our time there. We captured a day by day photo diary on Instagram of all our adventures. We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed taking part in all these winter activities in Alberta!

The Yamnuska Wolf Dog Sanctuary was one of the most beautiful experiences we had in Alberta. These wolf-dog cross breeds have been rescued or found and rehabilitated at the sanctuary. Some are found new homes and some will stay here forever. They’re doing amazing work at educating the public and taking care of abandoned wolf dogs. There’s a lot of work that goes in to caring for this animal and many people breed and buy them without having the proper knowledge.
Thanks to Joe Media Group for filming our adventure we had a blast with our camera crew Ryley and Justine. These Instagram videos are just a sneak peak of the amazing videos to come!
When the sun comes out over the Rocky Mountains, the Views are out of this world.
Ice Climbing is something that we’ve always wanted to try and we couldn’t be happier that we finally got the chance in Alberta. Alberta is the top spot in the world for ice climbing and we can understand why. You can find great ice 8-months of the year!
While Skijoring on Spray Lake, we had the chance to see a dogsled team go by. This just epitomizes what Alberta is all about to us.
Speaking of Skijoring, one of the coolest winter activities that you must try is hooking up cross country skis to a team of sled dogs. We had a blast being pulled across Spray Lake and we even eventually got the hang of it.
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise has one of the most beautiful views on earth. We really liked this perspective of the little red cabin on the frozen lake of Lake Louise.
During our Sleigh Ride from Chateau Lake Louise, we came to a frozen waterfall at the end of the trail.
Snowboarding at Lake Louise was awesome. While we were there we enjoyed a 30 cm (1foot) dump of snow. No crowds, lots of snow and awesome runs. Who could ask for more?
Lots of snow in the Rockies makes for some great skiing. But be sure to follow the signs and precautions. There is a very real danger of getting caught in an avalanche when you go off trail in to the back country.
I don’t think there is a better place in the world to take a day trip snowshoeing than in Canmore, Alberta. Within minutes you are in the middle of the wilderness. We saw elk in the distance and cougars are definitely hanging out in the bushes here. Canmore is located in a valley in the heart of the rockies and the views are out of this world.
Even looking down on the city of Canmore is pretty spectacular. This was taken on the road up to Spray Lake, Alberta just outside of town.
During our Ice Walk in Banff, we had the opportunity to watch Ice Climbers in action on the upper canyon walk. These waterfalls are some serious business to climb!
Alas our trip has to come to an end. Canmore is only an hour outside of Calgary and Banff is just another 20 minutes further. Get yourself a rental truck at the Calgary Airport and take a road trip out to these spectacular destinations. A trip to Alberta is great anytime of the year. I’d have to say though, we’re leaning towards winter as our favourite.
