Deb Gets a Ride with the Temple Elephant – Video
We set our alarms to see Lakshmi the temple elephant of Hampi. It was something that we had wanted to witness for years. An elephant being washed in the river by her master. We thought that we had missed our chance because we didn’t go to the elephant sanctuary in southern India. But as luck would have it, in Hampi they wash Lakshmi daily.
We witnessed the cleaning twice. It was surprising how few tourists were there, but it also made it special. Local people bath and wash their clothes in this river. And Lakshmi takes a bath right along with them.
In this video, Deb gets to take a ride on the temple elephant. I don’t know why, nobody else was allowed, maybe it was because they saw us the day before, maybe it was because we were there earlier to witness the temple Baba be blessed by Lakshmi, maybe it was just because they had some extra time to kill.
Whatever the reason, we were happy to have her hop on for a ride.

She looks pretty comfortable there during her bath. I wouldn’t think that elephants would need to be bathed so much. More ritual or do they have an odor?

I would guess that she’s enjoying it. I suppose if all you have to keep you entertained is to give out a few blessings and occasionally let someone ride on you, why not get a good scrubbing twice a day?
