It’s easy to fall into the addiction of wanting the latest and greatest. I Love what you said about “Telling your story through sound”, It took me a while to realize how incredibly important it is, but now I don’t even start editing before I have a song to inspire me.

An external audio jack is one of those things you think you have until you actually look for it. It’s one of the most important features, but they never advertise it very well. (They’re focused to much on having the bold FULL HD 1080)
You’re right, panasonic does have some great options. Portability is huge for me, but obviously I have tech requirements as well. I think that the High End handi-cams have a great balance of both. Thanks for the Comment Nate!

There are a few tech hurdles, but the main skill of having “The Eye” definitely transfers over. I went the opposite direction as you, video first, then photography. Very glad I did though, it helped me a lot in understanding the mechanics of how cameras capture images and video!

Yes, very important! I’ve held up so many tour groups during my travels lagging behind to get the footage I need. Even in post, to make something stunning it takes a lot of time. I feel it’s well worth the work though. I great video can really catapult your career.

Great tips Mike. Kudos to you for all that you’ve learned and how much you’ve improved as time went on.
After 15 years producing broadcast TV, I am constantly telling my video clients that gear is NOT that important, technique is. Learn how to compose an interesting shot, tell a good story, pace your editing, and tell your story through SOUND – the beautiful pictures go on top of the sound which actually tells the story. You have to then “write to your pictures.”

And number one above all else…is the story. What is your focus? Like you said, plan. And tell it through real people – that way we can connect, we can relate. Know your story and why you are producing each separate video piece.

It always amuses me how squeamish people can be around animals that are used from food. I am an American of Chinese descent who spent my childhood near San Francisco’s Chinatown. It was a weekly experience to go with my mom to the fish markets (where a live fish is retrieved from a tank and prepared in front of you.) It was quite a *foreign* experience for me back then to see neatly packaged chicken with no heads or feet and fish with no bones. (In short, any meat that did NOT resemble the creature it came from). I think it is imperative that every child be properly taught that the meat you see in the supermarket all used to be part of a living, breathing creature that gave up it’s life to be eaten. (and similarly, that french fries come from potatoes, etc.)

“People connect with people, not places” great advice, very succinctly stated!

I am looking to get a new camera that takes video – things I am specifically looking for are an external mic input – not all DSLR’s have this feature, I think it would be quite valuable. Also, there are other options (as you know) that are non SLR – such as many of the Panasonic cameras. They seem to fit the quality/size trade-off quite well.
