Bula Vinakka! Hello, Welcome to Fiji. You will hear these words every where you go in Fiji as warm and genuine smiles greet you at every turn. We have been to nearly 60 countries during our travels and nowhere on earth seems as happy and genuinely glad to see you as the people of Fiji!
Hostel Bookers is running a game of photo tag and were kind enough to include us in their inaugural post. I love going back through photographs that I haven’t looked at recently. Each one tells a story and reminds me of a precious moment in time.
Picture perfect portraits tell so much about the subject. When we travel, we meet so many sweet and curious children around the world that absolutely love having their photos taken.
Last week on CTV we talked about our top adventure destinations in the world. While all countries offer adventure of some kind, there are a few that we have been to that seem to cater to the true adventurous spirit.
It would be easy to go to Fiji, check into one of the Coral Coast resorts on the main island of Viti Levu, and never needed to leave the grounds. But the real rewards await when you venture out to explore the real Fiji.
2010 is drawing to a close and it is the perfect time to reflect on the events of the past year. We have had quite an amazing year when we stopped to think about. It is funny, when it is your own life, you don’t really realize just how incredible things are while they are happening, but in retrospect, life can be quite extraordinary. I won’t lie, things haven’t been all roses. We worry about where the money will come from, what the future will hold and if we will ever feel comfortable enough to actually stop counting every penny that we spend.
You think your job is tough?Try working the salt factory of Fiji. Located in a remote corner of the main island of Fiji, this salt factory gathers salt by traditional means.
White Water Rafting in Fiji was one of the most spectacular days we had in the country. It was just about what we would call a perfect day. We made great new friends, enjoyed stunning scenery and had great thrills.
Let’s fly all the way to Fiji to play paintball! Okay, that wasn’t exactly the case but we did end up having a paintball adventure while spending some time in Fiji. We arrived at Sonaisali Island Resort on our final day and were bummed to receive such a warm welcome and beautiful room in a quiet resort that was absolutely gorgeous, but not have the time to enjoy it.
It was a last minute schedule change that took us to the Oho Caves in Fiji. We were looking to squeeze in one more adventure during our stay on the main island and Sarah of Tourism Fiji had just the thing. The Tao Village has recently allowed tourists into their village for visits and their sacred Oho Caves are the star attraction. We took an hour-long drive from the Outrigger Lagoon Resort on the Coral Coast through a very wet yet green countryside on a very bumpy gravel road. Our driver Vincent told us that he was to take the old van, as the roads were too rough for the newer models.
When visiting Fiji you will find yourself taking part in many a Kava ceremony. It is an important aspect of visiting any village and it is customary to present a gift of Yaqona (Kava root) to present to the executive head of the village. It can be a little confusing when you don’t know what to do, but don’t worry, the Fijian people are very patient and will talk you through the process. But to make things a little easier for your next trip to Fiji here are some facts and tips on what to expect when partaking in your very own Kava ceremony.
Fiji was amazing. We got to do some great adventures even though it rained almost our whole time there. On the last day as we were leaving the Sonaisali Resort for the airport there was a clearing in the sky. I grabbed my camera and snapped this shot as the sun set. It was the last image I took from Fiji and one that I will remember.
Wheeeeee! The Zip Fiji sign says it all as we make our final turn from the main highway to the jungle canopy of the Pacific Coast. Fiji’s adventure capital, this portion of the main island will not disappoint. Our adventure today was with Zip Fiji. The only canopy zip line in the South Pacific, Zip Fiji’s zip lines were developed with the same technology as the lines that we have all heard so much about in Costa Rica.
Your river guide is the “Guide with No Name,” Moses stated to us when dividing us all into groups of 4 four our White Water adventure in Fiji. Everyone else was given their guides names but Moses, the fun co-ordinator and chief in charge of us for the day, wasn’t sure who we were getting. We joked that is sounded very “Zen Mastery” Ah, the guide with no name will lead us through our journey of Fijian enlightenment.
We didn’t know what to expect when we booked a tour with Rivers Fiji to white water raft the Upper Navua River in Fiji. But once we met our guide Moses, we knew that we were in for a day to remember. Riding these waters for 12 years and one of the original guides in Fiji, Moses led our team of 5 boats down stunning scenery and exhilarating rapids weaving through a pristine rainforest. We were lucky and ended up in his raft with the fabulous and fun Amy and Dan from California. Moses kept us laughing all day long.
Well folks, today is the day. We are en route to Fiji. We’ve spent our time at the tanning salon, burning our pasty white Canadian Butts and have the swim suits packed. After a quick overnight at the L.A. airport we will be flying on to Fiji courtesy of Tourism Fiji. We will be in transit for a couple of days so we won’t be able to give you updates, but as soon as we settle in at the Pearl Fiji Resort, we will let you know what is in store for the next week in Paradise.
