We have saved thousands of dollars by seeking out free accommodation on our travels. These opportunities are easier to find than you’d think and have not only saved us money but led us off the beaten track, provided some of our most interesting travel experiences, enabled us to connect with local communities and been a refreshing break from the backpacker trail.
During the holiday season money is tight. However, we have a little nest egg that we can use through our travel rewards with American Express to stay at hotels during the festive season.
Want to take part in Adventure Travel? Many people have asked us how they can add adventure into their travels. They think that if they don’t have a lot of time, they can’t have an adventure. Oh yes you can!
The idea of taking a sabbatical is one that has spread into workplaces all over the world, to the point at which many people now consider a career break in order to travel.
Trekking to Everest Base Camp has been on our top adventure list for many years. When traveling, a person always has to be on their guard. All countries and cities have their dangers and annoyances and India probably is one of the worlds leaders when it comes to scamming tourists. Here are a few that we either encountered or heard about during our travels through the country and hopefully will help you when you travel to India or another developing country in the world.
It was so easy. How can this be? We decided that we should extend our Visa for Sri Lanka just in case we are not allowed on the plane. India has changed their Visa rules and a tourist is not allowed back in the country until they have been gone for two months. We awoke at 5:00 am to catch the bus north to the capital. The office was packed with people. Hundreds of people were in a mass on the main floor.
A few weeks ago we posted an article about the changes to the Visa rules in India. India has now changed their 6 month multiple entry Visa to basically a non re-entry visa. We did some research on the subject and after reading about the new visa rules in the Times of India and the India Times, we came to the conclusion that the average tourist that already has a 6 month multiple entry visa should not have a problem coming back to India. Well things seem to have taken a confusing turn. If they refuse us entry, we may just have to fly on to Nepal early or fly back to this paradise of an island that we absolutely love, Sri Lanka. Or we could end up like Tom Hanks in the Terminal and stuck living in the Delhi Airport without visa or country.
People traveling to India on a tourist visa cannot reenter the country until two months have past after exiting.
The change occurred after the arrest of American man David Coleman Headley. India has changed its Visa rules after learning that the American terror suspect freely exited and entered India several times without arousing suspicion. Headley took part in the 2008 26/11 terror attacks killing 173 people.
The thing about traveling by train in India is that it is always overbooked and very busy. You would be very wise to know your itinerary and book ahead. Unfortunately for Dave and I, we are on a very loose schedule and like to go with the flow. We never know how long we want to stay in a place, so we don’t book ahead. This has been the cause of many a headache here in India for us.
Jet Lag. We all get it. There isn’t any fighting it. We always think that we can beat it, but it gets the best of us. Jet Lag get’s Dave and I every time. We always have these grandiose plans of starting adventures when we arrive. We think that we will sleep for a couple of hours and get up feeling refreshed after a long flight. It never works out that way and no matter what we do it takes two to three days to start feeling like your old self again. Here are the best ways that we have found cut the time that it takes to recover from jet lag.
Little did I know that I would already be living life as a backpacker before leaving Canada. We have been spending our evenings at the local coffee shop catching up on emails and blog posts, negotiating with advertisers and finalizing the last of our banking. Well, even in a developed country like Canada problems can arise. While we are traveling, we expect we expect little mishaps along the way, but to have them start before we even began is a little bit frustrating. Here are some of the things that we have learned while not having an Internet connection at our beck and call.
We have received a few emails lately asking us how we travel the world. People want to know what we do in our day to day lives to save and budget and people want to know how we afford it. Many people are so afraid to take a chance to follow their dreams that they forget to live. As travelers, we view life as living, not the amount of things that you have in your possession. If you are feeling the same way, you just may want to check out the links that we have listed above.
Since Dave and I are going through this again right now, we thought that it would be a good time to let you know how we prepare all of our banking and financing before a world travel. It can be a little overwhelming when you leave for a trip putting all of your accounts in order, but if you take it step-by-step, things can go pretty smoothly and you can travel worry free.
