Alternatively, you can create your own free accessmyid—style 'travel vault' by scanning your important documents, saving each document as a .jpg or .gif file, and then emailing those files to yourself at a freely available webmail address (we recommend Google’s Gmail owing to its ease of use and storage capacity). Ensure that the documents you emailed to yourself came through properly and store them on the server (ie don’t delete them—save them into a special folder). This option may not be as secure as accessmyid; however, it is free and should suit most people!

Hi Trisha, I agree. After traveling for so many years one way, it is hard to go digital all the way. We still have hard copies of everything, but just in case we get robbed of everything during a shady taxi ride or something, at least we will have all of our important numbers and account numbers online. I agree 100% about hints. We are big at putting in partial pins and hints to our passwords. Great advice.

Hi Nora, we are just like you too. we still have photocopies as well. But we just found AccessMyID and decided that it would be an added safety feature. We have been travelling for so long it is hard to break an old habit. I am sure that the younger kids that are all digital by now:)

Hmm....I feel like a bit of a dinosaur in that I still have a huge folder with hard copies of just about everything official, plus photocopies, plus photo scans on my computer. It may be a bit different since we're on the road full-time, but then again maybe that's just an excuse.

Genius! I remember sneaking around work a few weeks before I left on a year long backpacking trip and doin some mega photocopying. Thankfully I never had to use any of it, with this though, might be that extra piece of mind people need.

What a great service! Like you I always have traveled with copies just in case but this is really much safer. I think I still would be hesitant to put any really important passwords in, but just because I'm paranoid and hate trusting websites with keeping my data safe, but I think I would use it and just put some hints or partial passwords with hints about the missing bits.....

I have three trips coming up so I'm definitely giving them a try!

That's really neat - I am signing up just for that username and password storage! Well, and the document storage too ;-) Thanks for sharing this resource, I don't know how many useless minutes I spend typing in wrong username and passwords searching for the right one!
